This is just beyond stupid to me, and I just had to throw it out there and see what other people might think about it.
This is how rumors get started. What you saw wasn't the News Boys rehearsal. You were watching rehearsal for opening ceremonies on June 15th.
Now, the News Boys have been practicing before park hours with the Red Car Trolley. I've seen and heard them, and they look and sound great. The music is fantastic, and I guarantee guests will definitely enjoy this treat in the street.
In the parks when just walking past I'm sure it will add a lot of energy to the area. Shows like this rarely are as good on video then they are in person. I didn't care much for Minnie's Fly Girls when I watched it on YouTube but I saw it in person and really enjoyed it! In the setting it's fun! Outside of the setting, it's a little hokey... We'll see but based on how I felt about MFG and how I turned out loving that show, I have higher hopes for this one. Plus this is only a small segment of the show and doesn't include the classic Newsies songs my sisters are so excited about.
So here's what the music sounds like. I hear some techno bits, but they're very, very small touches in the overall sound, which is mostly 1920/30s jazz and swing inspired.
Forget about the music.
They need to take out that whole bit about "Maybe California will have a team of their own. Someday." Actually in 1923 baseball was very popular and in fact LA did have a professional baseball team -- the Los Angeles Angels. They were in the Pacific Coast League. So this whole part really needs to be removed.
This actually bugs me more than the music issue. Although the arrangement being used doesn't feel right anyways.
Disney - don't be afraid to seize the day, and don't be afraid to have a period show with ACTUAL PERIOD-SOUNDING MUSIC!
(That drum machine reminds me of when a local theater company did The Music Man with synthesizers! Not the same period of music, but equally ill fitting.)
I actually defended the use of modern music in the recent Great Gatsby trailer, but Disney - you are not Baz Luhrmann! You are not "hip" or "trendy" and you never will be! Now go get whoever did the jazz orchestrations for The Princess and the Frog soundtrack so they can fix this!!!!!
But I am glad to see a semi-original show in the parks
The two song choices were great. Love that they're using "Clap Hands"... perhaps to open the show?
The whole techno beat however, is strange. On one hand it seems to add little umph to their vocals but on the other hand, it feels like Ethel Merman singing "There's No Business Like Show Business" to a thumping disco beat.
I see what you mean about the techno beat. It sounds like a rave, but other than that the music seems decent for the area, just get rid of the techno drum machine. The Choreography seems cool though where they are throwing the girl newsie around.
Yeah... that video was.... odd...
And the costumes seem very unauthentic to the period too.
Good morning, son
In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...
