Impressive - much better event synchronization than I expected. Someone needs to deconstruct these things and figure out how they work. Maybe inaudible sounds to key effects... or IR.

Am I evil? yes, I am
Am I evil? I am man, yes, I am
If you notice one person's hat at 0:43 doesn't go off and keeps flashing. I can think of two reasons:
1: Malfunction, which I think is more likely considering it was acting fine up until that point.
2: "Show Mode" for interactive lights and a "Flashing Mode" that act like normal light up ears. This would be much cooler.
The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing - Walt Disney
Shut up and get to work - Me
I agree! I'm really short too so I know how much it sucks to be standing behind a tall person or someone with a hat so I always take any articles on my head off so short people/kids around me can see. It's just a courtesy.
Anyways, I loooove the idea of the hat! So cool! I'd get one if they weren't so ugly!
...After a YEAR I finally was able to figure out my password again! I'm baaack! Woohoo!(:
Disney is my life <3
Thank Walt for all he did! <3

Keep Disney the way Walt intended it!!
Well I guess the hats really did make an impact to the new World of Color Show-Glow with the Show!
So for those of us losers who were too late to get the comp tix...apparently they are selling the package as the ears, a pin and a lanyard at 3 stores...but no sign of them in the stores yet
Please consider the environment before printing useless emails
I'm hoping the ears don't go the route of Apple where you can't change the batteries! (sorry for the Apple joke, I own Apple products, but I had to go there!)
Looks like Disney has a winner on their hands here! And it looks like I'll be wearing a pair everywhere I go in DLR then!
Jealous is not he word for me
I'm hoping these will be reusable too! I have come to the point where I only go to DLR in morning to avoid the crowds who arrive later in the day. The addition of these new interactive ears are a great incentive to stay in the parks for a whole day visit and use them during the evening entertainment.
My guess is they work on an RF frequency. If they used IR it would have to be line of sight which would cause reception issues.
Found an interesting article on OCRegister about the new ear hats. Besides WOC and the Mad T Party, Flo's V8 Cafe and Luigi's Flying Tires are revealed to be one of the other attractions these new smart harts work.
Smart hats turn World of Color into an interactive experience | hats, hat, world - News - The Orange County Register
What's really interesting is the insinuation that they somehow talk to each other, and collect information on how many times they've been worn to WOC. This means that they have transmitters, and they are collecting data. To what end? And how is Disney collecting that data? Strange, to say the least.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Next Trip in 2012 to see the final product
You'd be surprised at how well Infrared light will bounce. That said, It isn't IR, you would see it in the video (cell phones are really good at viewing IR). I would guess it needs to be something very cheap and easy to manufacture. Perhaps an FM or AM tuner locked on a frequency. Those chips are easy to build and cheap to make.
