    Re: Upcoming Fastpass Enforcement??

In regards to fastpass backing up:

You don't notice until you've actually worked at an attraction with fastpass how much the line backs up with late arrivals.

Soarin' was the worst. People would show up 8 hours late and get in line after a parade, which would congest the queue. If the fastpass line was backed up, it would also bring the standby to a grinding halt.

It would be much better if Disney just started limiting the number of passes produced. Maybe increase the intervals between return periods from 5 minutes to 15 minutes?

You're suggestion is interesting , but I am not sure if it would really help put a dent in the crowds at the end of the day in situations like the one you mentioned.

Disneyland describes Fastpass as saving your place in line. Theoretically, the return times support this notion. Say the FP ticket was an actual human being (like your friend) literally holding a spot for you in line. Would you come back 8 hours later while they stood there letting others go in front of them because they reached the front hours ago?

No (especially if it was a friend). Unless you are Disney villain maybe...haha

Of course, an actual human place holder is out of the question. Thus, the FP system is born (sort of).

Say Space Mountain’s wait time is 60 Min.

The ticket is Guest A's placeholder- the "proof" that he/she "got in line" at say 12:00 and “waited” the hour. At 3:30-4:30 return slot, it is his/her turn to ride Space Mountain.

All is good. Except it's not.

Guest B likes Space Mountain too and like Guest A, Guest B gets a fast pass /"gets in line" at 12:00 and receives a Fastpass for 3:30-4:30.

The return times finally comes, but wait... Guest B knows the park better than Walt himself. He/She knows that Space Mountain is busier at night and that the line will be longer than. Why waste a FP for a shorter line and why go during the return time if one does not have to?

Guest B decides to save the pass for later...for the nighttime because it’s more fun (for whatever reason people do this...).

Thus, Guest B waits till after the fireworks and heads over to Space Mountain where he/she realizes what a deal he/she has received: Space Mountain’s wait time is now two hours and his/her FP stock has just shot up.

He/she goes on the ride and Disneyland keeps on turning..

So what was the problem with Guest B waiting?

Guest B’s FP held his/her place in line for a 1 hour wait...not two.

If only Guest B and a few others were doing this, it would not make a huge difference. The problem is that Guest B is not alone in taking advantage of the lack of enforcement of the return time
Sometimes we cannot help, but be a little over dramatic...

If you take a look at the patent (it has a full breakdown of the database structure), you'll see that there's an account of percentage for those who arrive late, and do not show up at all. It's factored into the system as a rate of decreasing the amount of passes available as the day goes on. Earlier blocks give out more Fastpasses than later blocks, to account for the fact that: earlier blocks will have more people that don't use their Fastpass, and later blocks will have more people who use their Fastpass. In addition, the later blocks will have a certain percentage of late arrivals.

By enforcing the window, they can give out a set amount of passes for each block (plus the guessed amount for the percentage that don't show up). This means more Fastpasses given throughout the day. The system as built is very flexible, and I'm sure they've added in more stuff since the patent was filed 10+ years ago.

There's a system and science about theme park attendance that Disney can capture with Fastpass. Allowing people to use Fastpasses beyond the return time was a calculated decision, just as removing it will be. I don't think there's any reason for attacks of abuse to be called when the system can account for it, and a decision was made to allow it previously.
    Man. True this.

I know there are many times when I get a Fastpass and we don't use them. Many MANY times, because life is just weird like that sometimes, and the day doesn't work out as you hoped. I personally have never used a FP and come into a FP line that is out of control long or not manageable, nor anything to freak out about

Honestly, it just looks like people are wanting something to complain about. I love DLR and unfortunately, I only get to go 1-2x per year due to money restraints. I am just failing to see the problem with allowing people to return when they want to with their FP. I've never once returned during the window and it has never, ever been a problem. I've never had to wait any absurd amount of time (even in the evenings) for the FP line because too many people showed up. There is still a finite number of FP available, so I fail to see the problem. I've never once had an issue with my wait times when coming back with a FP outside of my return window. This whole arguement seems silly.

It's going to be hard to enforce the fast pass times because most of the rides that have them are closed down frequently. How would you enforce that?

Its not hard at all! Another poster already said it, but if you come back with your FP during the time and it shut down, they then can give you another FP where you can come back anytime in the day! In fact they do that a lot for people (or did) who are in line and the ride shuts down. They are given a pass to come back and avoid the line already. FP holders wont be any different.

    Re: Upcoming Fastpass Enforcement??

In regard to this line of logical thinking, what happens when RSR will inevitably be down and the hundreds (thousands?) of guests with FPs return for their time slot only to be turned away? Will it be like Summer 2010 when Guest Relations was swarmed by guests complaining about WOC being cancelled?

Please keep in mind, I'm just thinking out loud here. In the last week I've noticed several DCA attractions be shut down (TSMM, TOT, C.S.) and the lines at other attractions get congested as a result. If folks show up expecting to ride RSR, things could get dicey if they're turned away whether they waited for hours in stand-by or return hours later with their FP...

It will be exactly the same as every other FP attraction if they break down.
