June 15: I'm going! Need your help planning this spontaneous trip!!!

Bear with me, this is a wild and crazy thing for me to do by my standards.

My husband and I have decided to go (no kids) on June 15. We have all kinds of options. We are Premium APs. We can be there as early as needed. We will have a car. Our main goal is to be there in a decent place in line for the actual opening and see what ceremonial things we can. We want to buy some of the cool new merchandise. If we get to ride RSR then I'll consider that a bonus. We just want to be there for the sake of being there on opening day. We will probably only be staying until lunch time. Our actual family trip is planned for the next week with the kids. This is just a totally spontaneous mom-and-dad-going-for-it-because-we-can kind of event.

So what do we know about how early the parking lot will open? When will a line start forming? What are all the other crazy people planning on doing that early morning?

Just doing this is going to be a blast. An event. I'll tell my grandkids that we were there.

(Just fyi, the backstory on this is that we live in Nor Cal but my husband has been working in So Cal this last year. He commutes and flies down during the week, every week. I am using some of our boatload of Southwest points to fly down and meet him Thursday and stay at the hotel. He will be out of the office Friday am. And since we don't have the kids we can do this any way we want. So excited!!!)

Ok sorry I am reading through the Who is Camping Out thread. Forgot about that. But I would appreciate anything anyone has to say here too, especially now that we know about the merchandise in the Animation building.

You're going to have to get there pretty early. I would probably say around midnight the night before may be a safe bet; maybe even earlier. It's going to be a madhouse and I would think that the earlier you get there, the better off you'll be.

I would say 10pm the night before would be a good start to ask around to see if there is a line forming already for the next day. If memory serves there was a line for the leap year event before midnight. And in my best guess this even is way bigger.

So what do we think is the cut off for getting in line in order to get into the park at all that day?

I don't think we really know. For OMDD, I went to just go check out the line the night before and talked to the very first people in line, and they'd gotten there around 6:00-7:00pm. People weren't technically "allowed" to line up before 10pm so everyone just loitered in the area. I went there at around 11pm and there were easily hundreds of people already lined up. At that time, the Pumbaa lot was open but unmarked. Keep in mind, though, that they were giving away mouse ears to the first 2,000, which was a huge incentive to get in line way in advance.

I would imagine that they would have the same no lining up before 10pm rule. Or maybe even later. For OMDD people weren't allowed to line up in the Esplanade--they lined up by the buses for the Toy Story lot on the East side of the park. However, DL closes at 11:00 the night before, and they can't have people lining up in the bus loading zone when the zone is still active. I don't think they're going to clog DTD with a line either.

But hey, it's a once in a lifetime experience! If I were doing this, I'd go at 11:00 or maybe even 10 and bring something comfortable to sit on and plan to make it a whole night. Consider the whole thing an adventure . I've always made awesome friends when I'm stuck in line with die-hard Disney fans for hours and hours .

Anybody know (at least a rough estimate) at the capacity of DCA? I doubt there will be a time in the morning that the park will hit capacity... It is still a weekday... the lower level AP are blocked... the late afternoon when locals get out of work will probably see the park hit capacity... but who really knows what kind of turnout we will see.

I'm wondering about this as well! So you're not alone my dear! It's just getting harder to plan for these kinds of things any more. OMDD had those people lining up overnight, but I know that was mostly for the ears. After everyone was settled about an hour in, the place wasn't crowded at all, all day long. It didn't get crazy until around 7pm then especially at 9pm. I just wish we had a better way to predict what was going to happen, but alas, I know it isn't possible.

Luckily this trip, we're going to stay at the Park Vue which is directly across the street. I will be able to just leave the hotel, walk across the cross walk, and see how the line is forming. However I know that won't make things any easier. I'm not worried about rides or lines.. I too have the main concerns- The opening festivities, and when will they stop letting people into the parks. Oh, and the heat. But that's probably just me

I'm assuming they would have to let us into the park if we have reservations at the Carthay, what does anyone else think?

I wish us all luck, thanks for posting something for everyone to discuss possible strategies for the 15th!

I *just* decided to do this. You guys think I'd get in at all if I show up at 6am? (I need my beauty sleep). I don't need Cars Land I just want the LE merch.

Well, like I said earlier, I'll be right across the street from where the line will form. If anyone wants to give me their number, I can send text updates. We'll also be in the park on June 14th and I will have plenty of questions to ask Guest Services, so I don't mind transferring information through text if I found out anything interesting. I'll do my best to update on Micechat, but I'm not a big fan of using the internet on the phone so no promises!
