Thumbs up WDI thinking of new boats for pan?

    Everyone,

I was in the park yesterday morning and wondering around in Fantasyland, when I noticed a man (without a name tag) taking pictures of the Pan boats and holding a note pad and what looked like blue prints of the ride. When I asked around about what he was doing, CM’s told me that to everyone’s surprise, "WDI was thinking of redesigning the boats for Pan" and he was taking notes on the problems with the current boats. (Notice how that was said to me: "Thinking")

I asked a few different classics east CM’s and got the same story, even got the name of the guy. Anyone know if there is any merit to this rumor?

I did see the guy and the blue prints. Wish I had a camera. From what I was told, the new boats were going to be “more universal,” and hopefully with higher seats.

Can anyone with connections verify this?

"More universal"? As in, "universal access"?

"Higher seats"? As in, RR's Cartoon Spin Lenny the Cab Part Deux?

Why do I smell the distinct aroma of litigation avoidance?

Each boat currently acts and behaves differently from each other. Some are faster, and some are slower and completely different shapes.

The problem with the seats is that they are too low and extremely hard to load older SAP guests through unload. Older guests can’t bend over the sit in the low seat. Also, kids hit their chin on the lap bar because it is too high due to the seat height.

I love the seats, they are the most comfortable seats in the park for me.

Does more "universal" mean more standard and easier to fix/replace?

There is validity to this. I opened Pan one of the mornings that he was there taking notes. I was quite excited myself when I found out what he was doing.
    Good times.
4 to a boat, please! *prays to the WDI gods*

    Yeah...

    if anything ...

a way to increase capacity since the lines on this are the worst for all Fantasyland's 5 dark rides.

Wow! I think this is a good idea. The boats are fifty years old.

Maybe they will make them more like Paris. (Yes, that means 4 to a boat.)

The wait on Christmas day: 2 1/2 hours. (and that was like 9 am.)

not only that but i think the older boats have become a bit unsafe with the new lawsuit happy generation. They are way to open and smaller children not spurvise can easily fall out under the lap bars.
Problem i see is if they cover them too much visibility might be hurt while fyling over London.

Speaking of London, i think its time they went with newer lighting because the street and city lighting have been diminishing

Anyone think that they might make other changes/improvments to the ride. I mean... if they are thinking of redoing the boats, maybe they are thinking of other improvments.

Like Baloo mentioned... London could look better with real LED street lights, ect. Of course im hoping here, but why not! It's fun!

Maybe they can fix the volcano and rainbow while they are at it.

Re: WDI thinking of new boats for pan?

Sounds like the Lawsuit Lottery generation is getting to them. Unfortunately, there are a lot of less than honest people out there looking to get something for nothing...

And there is no insurance company demanding this - Disney is self-insured, if anything it's their own safety people leading this. They might have a Lloyds' umbrella liability policy in case they really get creamed, but for the "little" stuff (little being relative ) under $50 Million or so they handle themselves. Now you know the real reason why they keep raising the ticket prices.

The boats need doors or side rails of some sort to keep little ones from wiggling out that way while underway, and sculpted seats with split lap-bars to ensure nobody gets out. Side rails or "doors" made of open tubing would be better, since a lot of the ride is looking down. Solid sides on the car and solid doors would ruin the sightlines for the little ones.

Remember 'Roger Rabbit' - Large Grandma, small child, one lap bar to hold them both in the car. And no doors, so if the small one was on the load side, they could wiggle right out and overboard... One huge difference, though, the Peter Pan boats at some points in the ride are 15 feet or so above the floor. That's a long way down...

TheDude: The boats are all supposed to run at the same speed - they're each running off a 3-phase AC gearmotor (so they can't start in reverse)driving the rail wheels, and they're all geared the same. Any variations are due to load and wheel slip.

And he's right that the current seating ergonomics are bad - getting people with even modest mobility problems in and out of the cars is a chore. Leave the low seat in front, and make the back seat higher so they can look over the people in the front row.

One huge problem with making longer and lower boats to handle two rows is fitting them through the existing scenery without massive rebuilds. The walls and floor are very close to the current boats, getting any bigger will be a challenge. And doing it in the existing size envelope is just as daunting.
