I can only assume that it is for maintenance. So they don't have to walk the entire track. And maybe also for if it totally shuts down and they have to evacuate. For situations like this show. Space Mountain relies on mostly gravity and so when you stop, you stop. So that is most likely for getting off the ride without walking the track. Just my theory. I could be totally wrong.
I was watching the Video of Space Mountain with the lights on.
I saw what looked like an Elevator about the :35 second mark.
Is there an Elevator inside the ride?
Where does it go to?
I believe that could go to the lighting booth which is in between the track that takes you from lift to lift (right before takeoff). So maintenance only. You can see the booth if you sit on the left side and look left while on the last lift (during the countdown), and see a disco ball and some other lighting stuff. That or I am crazy.
So I found this still from a youtube video: (Space Mountain Disneyland Lights On - YouTube).
At around 1:11 you can see this "room" (at least I think it is a room) off to the left side when they are at the very top of the lift. I believe this is where the elevator would lead to. There is what seems to be an green exit sign there aswell so works must be able to reach that spot.
