Exactly. While it is unfortunate for those who may have wanted one, the discontinuation of this hat is being portrayed as the worst marketing decision since New Coke.
A lot of little decisions add up to a lot of bad ones. While in the over all scheme of things this seems tiny it is how we got to where we are at today with Disney merchandise. A bunch of little decisions which start to show their ugly teeth all at once which equals the one Disney philosophy. Unfortunately this is how corporations work. A very broad metrics to base their decisions off of.

The Coke reference doesn't really compare. Changing Coke to new Coke was not a little decision at all for them as their brand is only Coke. The disappearance of the hats is just another piece of the individuality that the merchansing department used to have.

The biggest tell tale will be if you see them come back. Then you know they messed up but we will have to wait and see.

Clearly I disagree. While not as huge, it's still a very iconic piece of merchandise that see people wearing all the time.
Unless Disney released a press release stating that they sold fine in DL but not WDW, its just speculation.

Indeed a huge advantage for them not us. At the end of the day they want to make money.

Yeah, I was wondering how people were reaching this conclusion with no real evidence. I haven't really seen anyone at Disneyland wearing the Peter Pan hats for a while now, I didn't know they were 'extremely popular.'

One Disney is something that Disney has tried to do where they take everything in Disneyland and Disney World and combine it to one brand: Disney Parks. This is why you see it on everything, even though the stuff in Disneyland is mostly Disneyland related and not just Disney Parks related. It sucks, but I guess its good for saving money.

But much like the direct to video sequels, I think OneDisney could cause more harm in the long run in regards to the company's name and finances in an effort to get rich off of something done cheap in the present. When people aren't buying merchandise, Disney will find other ways to get that money from the guests, be it jacking up the price of the hotels, the restaurants, or even the admission tickets.

But, if they've been discontinued for a while and nobody's brought it here up until now ... maybe they weren't so popular in the park after all?

If we followed the logic that every object in the park that didn't sell like hotcakes needed to be discontinued, we would have a very limited selection and lack of variety. It's not only extremely short sighted but very greedy, the same penny pinching strategies that has hurt the parks in the past. There comes a point where the merchandise and show are intertwined with each other. Decreasing merchandise variety only works to water down the overall presentation and brand.

Disneyland had merchandise bags with the 50th logo during the 50th celebration. Which was now 7 years ago. They're still using these bags at the Cast Member retail stores. While I am annoyed by the "One Disney" attempt at merchandising, I think it's completely acceptable, and I actually prefer they do it with things like merchandise bags and soda cups.
It's actually "Cars Land", not "Carsland".
