Castle - Update on the Little Lost Turret

The Castle turret, is a little less lost already.

As Disneyland announced the Princess Faire project at Carnation Gardens, I went taking a good look around and noticed a part of the castle lost deep in the bushes, which I wrote about a few months ago; a turret basically unseen for more than 50 years, despite millions of people looking right at it all the time. Since then construction has begun in the area, and I've gleaned a little more about the origins of the far-west turret, from a few old photos on the web (stuff from the park, daveland, etc.). It was not there at opening in 1955! Both sides of the castle grew outwards within the first few years. The addtion of Carnation Gardens probably necessitated extending this western side of the castle, possibly along with adding the Tinker Bell Toy Shop circa 1956/57. (The east side was, of-course updated to include Snow White grotto in 1961.)

It is already evident that the new Princess meetNgreet will show off this part of the castle for the first time in decades, as the area is already partially cleared of foliage. The little lost turret is already coming into view. Sleeping Beauty indeed.

Another good reason for this area to be updated. Shows how much Fantasyland this area really is.

Thank you for the update. I remember your thread; it was a very nice read. I'm glad the little turret is back in view and will hopefully be even easier to see once this revamp is complete.

So wish I had read your previous thread before our trip. I would have loved to pick this out when we were there over the last couple of weeks. Thanks for the revived update. I will have to look the next time

Is that the same turret shown here? My dad took this photo on August 27, 1956.

I think this is before they extended it some. That little arch should be about where the door into the toy shop is; or things have changed even more than I think. This is certainly one of the photos informing me about the area. Amazing how rare pictures are of this area.

This shot shows that big turret and little arch from July 1955:

And this one shows us that same area, perhaps in the act of being extended! Its all behind short plywood walls. We can see that in fact the door to the store is there now and much more wall has been added beyond, which must include the elusive Lost Little Turret, along there to the left, just out of view as always.

I'm surprised we still don't know more about this history....yet.

It is always a pleasure to see some interesting tidbit coming to light - in this case part of the Castle! I am going to add it to my list of things to look for next time we go.

Hidden Mickey - Historical fiction about Walt that mixes action and mystery with time travel and fantasy! Tweens to adults will enjoy these novels. And now, three gamebooks to play in Disneyland, DCA and WDW Magic Kingdom!

Check out my six action/adventure novels about Walt's lost diary and his epic quest. Visit my blog page!

Every time I go to Disneyland, I see/notice something I hadn't seen/noticed before (not to say that it WAS there, but they're all new experiences for me, so...)
    Thanks for this little tid-bit!
