I also have a newsflash. Disneyland IS for kids. It's also for everyone. But the reason why it gets that "it's for kids" label is because you can't drink there. In Vegas you can.

I love Disneyland but if people think Las Vegas is a Disneyland for adults, let them. Ultimately who cares? We shouldn't care this much about something so trivial. I regret that I devoted so much time posting about it.

I use this saying. it's pretty much true for me. As stated above they theme the casinos really well themed and you get immersed in them. I love both travel destinations the same and go to them for different reasons. Vegas has so much entertainment it's awesome. You don't even have to gamble, drink (i do neither) or go to strip clubs to enjoy it. If you like to eat and lounge by a state of the art pool trust me the resorts in Las Vegas are WAAAAAAAy better than the ones at DLR and on par with the top level ones in Orlando. if you love to shop they have the top notch shopping chains as well.

As far as people using the saying I never even thought of it before this thread as i am guilty of using it. It is my Disneyland away from Disneyland.

Re: who else hates this saying.....

Here's a few key questions about both.

    Is it immersive?
    Disneyland yes. Vegas yes.

Does it feature great theming and planning and environmental design?
    Disneyland yes. Vegas yes.

    Plenty of entertainment?
    Disneyland yes. Vegas yes.

    Are there rides/roller coasters?
    Disneyland yes. Vegas yes.

Good selection of restaurants and shopping?
Disneyland yes. Vegas even more yes.

    Great resorts and pools?
Disneyland yes. Vegas even more yes.

    Good for adults?
    Disneyland yes. Vegas yes.

    Good for kids?
    Disneyland yes. Vegas no.

    Plenty of "Adult" entertainment?
    Disneyland no. Vegas yes.

So there you have it. Vegas is LIKE Disneyland... but for grown ups!

It doesn't mean I purposely go to Vegas for fun. I can say no to a bachelor party, but I went to spend time with friends that I haven't seen in a long time. Would I choose to go there if it wasn't for that event? No. It's not for me. And I stated why I don't like going there.

No one's denying that Disney is also for kids. But to say that not being able to drink is what labels Disney as for kids only? I don't think that's a good way to put it. You can drink at a Chuck E Cheese. You can drink at DCA. Doesn't mean both are for all ages.

The whole point is that someone labeling Disney as only for kids/ Vegas is Disney for adults is ignorant. That's like saying watching professional sports is only for meat heads and losers. Or all surfers are hippies and wash outs. Or anyone that drinks alcohol is going to get a DUI. Or California is all beaches and stoners. None of these statements are true. It's a bad stereotype that shouldn't be perpetuated.

Can we just leave it as Vegas and Disney have different demographics and that blanket statements like saying that Vegas is Disney for adults is dumb?

I've been going to Vegas every year since I was about four years old...It's really not all that trashy if you don't want it to be. In fact, doesn't it have a pretty classy reputation nowadays? Some of the best fine dining and nightclubs in the world...Also, I wouldn't hesitate to bring my kids there, just so that they can experience the magic of 'O' and Mystère.

I know it won’t happen since they don’t even put casinos on their cruise ships, but I would love to see Disney try their hand opening a hotel/casino in Vegas. I could only imagine the theming that Disney would come up with if they are forced to compete and stay one step ahead of the other casinos on the strip. If the entertainment offerings would be anything like what is offered on their cruises, they would definitely be a step above their competition.
"You can cut me off from the civilized world. You can incarcerate me with two moronic cellmates. You can torture me with your thrice daily swill, but you cannot break the spirit of a Winchester. My voice shall be heard from this wilderness and I shall be delivered from this fetid and festering sewer."

Vegas "is" a Disneyland for Adults. You have to define Disneyland and make the comparison to Vegas.

Disneyland is a completely self-contained enviroment that kids can enjoy. It's a pleasure island for kids. It is kids safe. Kids love rides. There are plenty of rides for kids. The whole place is designed to entertain kids for hours and hours. Kids can never get tired of the place.

On contrast, Vegas is a self-contained enviroment for adults to enjoy their every VICE. There's smoking, drinking, gambling, whoring, and shopping for every adult to partake. It's an adult pleasure island. They can stay in their room or go outside. Either way, it is still adult all the way. There's no one to tell them NO. The entertainment is completely over the top like Disneyland, but with adult sensibilities.

The comparison is apt. We only seem to associate Disneyland with the positive, but never the negative. There are other comparisons of Disneyland as a urban project, which are always negative like a master planned capitalist dictatorial community or alternatively a socialist utopia.

    Howdy Pards,

"I know a place where dreams are born and time is never planned, it's not any chart, you must find it with your heart, Never Neverland."

The older I grow the more I am inclined to appreciate the wisdom of Peter Pan as it relates to growing up...or being a grown up. It simply is not all it's cracked up to be.

The word "adult" has been used to define many things we would be ashamed of if we were kids... Doin' "adult" things often times can be downright foolish.

I reckon I'd choose Disneyland or Neverland anyday over a smoke filled casino. I've never been all that anxious to lose money in the first place...and once you've seen Tinkerbell...you've seen all the girls you need to...oh...sorry Wendy...and Tiger Lilly...you two too.

Too many girls can mess things up. As long as you've got one to tell you stories...that's all you need.

Besides they got all those beautiful princesses at Disneyland ya know...whole bunches of 'em. And, they are even addin' a new one who can shoot a bow and arrow...Merida is her name. We got enough...and I even forgot the mermaids...

But, all you folks who consider yourselves "adults" you go ahead...that'll make the lines shorter for us kids...or...well...those of us who are "young at heart" anyways.

Smokin', drinkin', and messin' around like that just reminds me of that place Pinocchio went once...and you know what happened to him. No thank you. My ears are long enough...

Peter Pan for President! Oh...O.K....Captain then. Off to Neverland!!! Second star to the right and straight on till mornin' for me! All it takes is Faith and Trust...and, uh,...well, you know...
where is Tinkerbell when you need her? Oh, there she is! TINK...PIXIE DUST!!!

Adios for now. Talk to ya on down the trail.

I wish Vegas was the Disneyland for adults, then people would stop bringing their kids there!

Honestly.....drinking, gambling, promiscuity are all things that you would consider to be adult behavior, not for children. So with those items, Vegas is absolutely the Disneyland for adults. Atlantic City is Six Flags, Reno is Knotts, and Laughlin is Soak City.

No. We can't just leave it like that. People are going to say whatever we want and we'll just have to deal with it. Comparing vacation resort environments is not dumb. What's dumb is assuming that people would actually believe blanket statements like this one.

Also... comparing Disneyland to Vegas is absolutely NOTHING like the following:

-all surfers are hippies and washouts
-watching professional sports is for meat heads and losers
-anyone who drinks is going to get a dui
-california is all beaches or stoners

THOSE are bad stereotypes that you created and has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the statement of comparing Disneyland and Vegas, both places that provide an escape to those who choose to enjoy them.

You don't like Vegas. That's fine. But just because you don't like one doesn't mean others can't compare the two.

DISNEYLAND is great. People love it. Consider it a compliment that people say that Vegas is Disneyland for adults. It's not a put down. And if anyone confuses that statement and actually THINKS that Disneyland is only for kids... that's dumb. That's REALLY dumb.

I am surprised that this thread has become such a hot button topic.

I personally love both Vegas and Disneyland for different reasons, but one reason always remains the same for both. I love architecture and I love admiring the differences in different buildings, and checking out all the little details. For example, I love the frescoes at the Venetian as much as I love the gigantic fireplace at the Grand Californian.

But all in all, Disney and Vegas are completely different forms of entertainment, but equally as enjoyable to different crowds.

Re: who else hates this saying.....

I love Disneyland and Vegas for exactly the same reasons, which is another way of comparing them.... food, design, luxury, fun, excitement, shows, rides.

However, Vegas does attracted older sensibilities and many places expressly forbids children especially with the drinking and gambling age requirements. Many places stay late and the party starts when it gets dark.

You can bring your kids to Vegas. There are plenty of daytime diversions. Kids can hang out at the pool, go shopping, visit Circus Circus or other kid friendly resorts. The city of Las Vegas has plenty of kids museums and recreational activities. There are certainly more things for kids to do there today than when I was a kid in the 1970s when I distinctly remember being locked up in my room when the adults hit the town. It was boring then. Not anymore.

Not any more than statements like 'Disneyland is for everyone' or 'Disneyland is for families'

You are applying this fallocy that because a group is mentioned, every single individual in that group must comply and appreciate or feel the same about the place. That's just bogus.

Because some people don't like Vegas, that doesn't make it a premier adult destination that a lot of people enjoy and get satisfaction from.

Just like because some people like Disneyland, and not others, that doesn't make the statement that 'Disneyland is for everyone' 'immature and ignorant'.

I didn't create those stereotypes. They're stereotypes that exist. Ask someone from say... Georgia, or Iowa, or New Mexico that has never left those places about California and that's what they think of it. They ignore the farmland, the mountains, and desert. There are people who think that professional sports are only watched by jocks and are all overpaid people.

There are people outside of MiceChat DO think that Disneyland is only for kids. That's the problem. It's an incorrect stereotype which was my point about the other stereotypes... they're wrong.

Yes, they're both vacation spots "to get away" from it all. But to argue that Vegas is the adult version of Disneyland is saying that what you do in Vegas makes you an adult.

Maybe it's the choice of using the word "adult" since adult = maturity, which doesn't happen in Vegas for some people.

I never said that Disneyland is for everyone. Or that Disneyland is for all families.

Yes, I don't like Vegas. Whoever wants to go can enjoy it however they want. People can like both, or hate both, or one or the other. But saying that Vegas is the Adult version of Disneyland is claiming that you can't be an adult and like Disneyland. That's like saying that Disney is the kid version of Vegas.
