is this really such a big problem that they went and installed these ugly looking things?
can't recall an instance where handrail-sitting was ever a problem during one of my visits

Now that I have thought about and looked at them some more... I see a dangerous wavy edge instead of nice smooth railing. I could see a child standing on the bottom rung holding on, slipping and getting hurt/cut/eye injury of some sort, as well as the casual guest that trips now and then. While both would be bad, I think I would rather fall and hit my head on a smooth round pipe, rather then the wavy edge of a thick piece of metal.
They don't look very friendly.
I would have preferred a video shown to those waiting in line of people sitting on the rails and falling off and cracking their heads open. And interviews with rail fallers from their hospital beds.
I don't love the look of them...but I see the point. It is annoying when someone is sitting on the bar w/ their backpack hanging over into another groups 'space'. I also have a child who is pretty sure every bar is a jungle gym and find myself constantly telling her to get off of them...I look like an idiot parent and she looks like a bratty kid that won't listen. She slipped backwards once...scared the crap out of me, but didn't phase her. I had one person behind me tell me that I should talk to Disney as it's a safety hazard (???). I rolled my eyes and said no...not really- they are not intended to be sit on, it's my job as a parent to keep her off of it...The person clearly didn't agree w/ me and thought I should get something for my child falling backwards....So I'm sure other people think that way to...sad..but true...
That particular design shows they aren't handrails, never were, just permanent cattle movement motivators.
Not a fan, but what do you do?
Nay! But I've always been the guy to pretend I didn't know the no-sitting rule...Never had an accident with another person so far, though.
This is awesome. I am so sick of someone’s rump spilling into the line from the next section. I like the look as well. Very decorative.
Unfortunately, the legal system doesn’t look at things that way. If someone falls off, there is a possibility of a lawsuit. Even if the person wasn’t obeying the rules and was still sitting on the railing in direct defiance of warnings by Disney employees, Disney would still have to go to the expense of preparing their case and either defending it, settling, seeking summary judgement… etc. It is less expensive to put a permanent and aesthetically pleasing physical deterrent to sitting on the railing.
That would seem like a liability, too. All it takes is one person to get their foot stuck as they are dismounting to trigger a law suit. Again, better to just deter people from sitting there.
I think their trying to prevent anyone from sitting there. Not just children. In fact, it is usually adults that I see sitting on the rails. The kids are usually swinging from them.
"You can cut me off from the civilized world. You can incarcerate me with two moronic cellmates. You can torture me with your thrice daily swill, but you cannot break the spirit of a Winchester. My voice shall be heard from this wilderness and I shall be delivered from this fetid and festering sewer."
Am I the only one who already figured out how I can still sit on the railing with even the bumps in place. I have a sweater that I use when I go to the park and its very thick when I fold it up. All I have to do it fold it up put it on top of the bumps and now I have a seat. I don't like the way they look and I have a feeling that this probably will not stop anyone who really wants to sit on a rail.
THIS. Many parents go to DLR with their kids and go into vacation mode letting the kids do whatever they want. We never let our daughter do that, and the one time she did try, she fell back into a grassy area. She never tried it again.
Even if you're on vacation - you're still responsible for your kids.
Heck if it helps keep people off of them then I am all for it.
LOL, they're ugly, but I can't say I hate the idea behind them. I'm sick of bored kids bumping into me and holding up the line because they're too occupied by swinging on bars like monkeys in a tree. Time will tell if these bumps are effective in curbing this behavior or not. Kids might still find a way to work around the bumps in order to horse around on the rails, like using the bottom one instead. But then, that's not Disney's concern. I'm sure they're only interested in preventing people (mostly kids) from sitting on the top rail, falling over, and getting hurt.
I never sit on the rails, but sometimes I do lean on them to give some relief to my legs/feet from standing too long. Looks like these bumps won't prevent that, at least.
I'm against them. After a long day in the park, I'm looking for anything to take a load off my feet.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.Mark Twain
Did you know that 87% of spoken statistics are made up on the spot?
It may be their own fault, but I smell lawyers behind this. Doubtless Disney has endured some nuisance suits from dufusses who fell off the hand railings.Methinks the goal would be to keep the lines moving, so nobody gets bored and tempted to try sitting on the rails in the first place... And if they fall off, It's Their Own (Darned) Fault.
