People Mover...why did it really close?

My question is why did the People Mover really close? I know that there was 2 deaths that happened on this attraction but those deaths occurred in 1967 and 1980 and the attraction didn't close until 1995. So what is the real reason why this attraction closed?

I have read somewhere that it was policy that when one ride opened, another had to close. Pressler was president in 1995, but I'm not sure if this was his policy or whether it came before or after. But interestingly, Indiana Jones opened in 1995, and the People Mover closed the same year.

Because it consumed way too much energy. That's what I heard.

The fact that only six people a day rode it probably contributed too...

Re: People Mover...why did it really close?

My understanding is they were redoing Tomorrowland in 1998. We all know how that turned out. It seems they pinched pennies and when they turned it into a "thrill ride" aka Rocket Rods, they didn't retrofit (or whatever the technical term is) the tracks to handle the extra stress of the new ride, and it caused structural damage to the tracks. Also, the ride was subject to frequent closures, which probably escalated their costs (in other words, cut down their profits) and it didn't seem economically feasible to run it. I also believe that the costs to actually fix the tracks to handle the stresses would be unreasonable.
True or not? Your guess is good as mine. It sounds reasonable, though.

It wasn't always at capacity ,too many empty cars , the popularity wasn't what they wanted it to be and they wanted another thrill ride so they sacrificed the PM. They took a gamble so now it a new ride..... Adventure under the shade structure!

The one at Disney world (in my many experiences ) is the same way maybe half the cars are full but I hope they keep it because I love it!

They closed it to make way for Rocket Rods. Which was a gigantic failure. Like all of TL 98'.

It was futuristic back then and they replaced it with Rocket Rods that were neither a rocket nor a rod.

I heard the PeopleMover wasn't based on a movie, hence the shutdown!

That wes pretty much the reason for the closure. During Pressler's reign, cutbacks, closures and reductions were that norm. Merchandise was cheapened, restaurants closed, hours cut back, maintenance reduced, etc.

The People mover (along with the Skyway) was shut down and (most) the cars were chopped up. Many of the operational cutbacks were in order to reduce the number of cast members.

After Indy, things went downhill until Pressler and Eisner were gone.
