Re: Why did the Tahitian Terrace close? Do you remember it fondly?

As I recall it, Tahitian Terrace closed, not because it wasn't popular, but because they thought a Polynesian show was dated, too expensive to stage, and they could charge a whole lot more for an Aladdin dinner show tied to the hit movie (with a chocolate magic lamp for dessert) - and so have a bigger profit margin. But Aladdin's dinner was way too expensive and show not as fun - and it closed very quickly. It was the Aladdin restaurant that replaced TT that flopped (see also the always popular Golden Horseshoe Revue, etc.).

(BTW -- Tahitian Terrace was far and away my favorite Disneyland restaurant back then),

    Do you remember it fondly?
What I remember is that it was always closed when we went to Disneyland. I used to go with a large group in the late 70's and early 80's. We always went the Tuesday after Labor Day. Someone would call Disneyland to make sure the Tahitian Terrace was going to be open and they were always told that it would be. Then we'd show up and it would turn out that Labor Day was the last day it was open for the season. This happened for a few years running. So I've never actually eaten at the place but I can tell you exactly when in the year it closed.

Maybe John Lasseter in his Hawaiian shirts has a soft spot for it? Let's get it re-opened before the 60th!

Of course I remember it fondly, VERY fondly.

Only an idiot would not want the Tahitian Terrace to return.

Remember that people are entitled to their opinions, and that it should be respected.

I was not around at the time they had the TT. It sounds like a unique experience that I would be interested in.

No, not necessarily. In the 70s I dated a brilliant post-doc anthropology major who was flamingly, insanely, violently anti-Tiki. When she learned that I loved the Tahitian Terrace and Tiki Room, she gave me the sort of look one normally reserves for baby Siamese twins and three-legged puppies.

The relationship tanked after two dates.

That place is so small that I don't even want to imagine how expensive it would be if it ever returned. Perhaps it could be expanded and rethemed to something less dated than 60's tiki theme. I wouldn't mind seeing it themed to british colonial safari like the rest of adventure land.
In the quest for quality, I have no problem with the characters footing the bill.

I remember it very fondly. I still have some souvenirs from the place, even though the leis don't look or say Disney. I just know! Also some sugar packets with scenes from Disneyland at that era. I used to get one of the 'cocktails' and felt very grown-up!

Hidden Mickey - Historical fiction about Walt that mixes action and mystery with time travel and fantasy! Tweens to adults will enjoy these novels. And now, three gamebooks to play in Disneyland, DCA and WDW Magic Kingdom!

Check out my six action/adventure novels about Walt's lost diary and his epic quest. Visit my blog page!

If they didn't have this tradition that Disneyland has to be alcohol-free (but the hotels, Downtown Disney and DCA not the case!) - real cocktails at a Tahitian Terrace Restaurant and Tiki Bar would be so nice!

Maybe if the event that Mousetalgia is hosting is a success it will show the powers that be that the Tahitian Terrace remains a viable concept.

Mousetalgia is, in my opinion, hands down the BEST Disneyland podcast! They are re-staging the Tahitian Terrace for one night only in October: https://www.mousetalgiastore.com//

Only thing close to Tahitian Terrace now is the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show over at Walt Disney World's Polyensian Resort.
