    Disneyland Hotel Golfing 1960's

Finding a picture of a building or structure from the Disneyland Hotel's history that is not all that common is always fun. This photo below is of the golf store that was located on Cerritos Street (across the street from the Hotel) next to the miniature golf course and in front of the driving range. To make it easier to see exactly where this was, I have also found an overhead picture which clearly shows its location. I have several shots zooming in for perspective.

Here is a close-up of the sign located on the storefront:

And now, just where was this building located?

    Still can't locate it?

That's the mini-golf course to the left, the driving range at the bottom and the open field to the right of the picture would soon (after this picture was taken) become the Hotel's Heliport.

Nice pictures it's hard to find ones with the old golf course, not to mention the less common driving range and mini golf.

Here are a few stills from a wonderful color film (with sound) I have called "A Special Place." Apologies for the picture quality but these are stills captured from film. The footage is amazing and shot in beautiful color. It's dated around 1961 or 1962 and features the construction of the first Tower Building at the Disneyland Hotel.

Wow, thanks for sharing these great, rare views from so long ago. I am utterly fascinated by the old layout of the hotel, and the surrounding land. Such wonderful expanses of space, that add a rather "zen"-like feeling. How I would love to have been around back then.

In the first aerial photo, I am curious about that area at lower left, immediately north of the monorail beam, and just south of a parking lot. Any ideas what this area contains?

Thanks again for posting these fascinating pictures!

Thanks for that close-up, Oldhotelguy! Very interesting! Looks like a large tree, surrounded by perhaps some sort of picnic area? Quite a mystery! Could this be a vestige of the former "Holidayland" area?

This is a fantastic view of Holidayland! The area would eventually become Pirates and the Haunted Mansion as well as Backstage Support Facilities. One of those old trees still survives backstage today and a service gate was called the Holidayland Gate for over 40 years!

    What year did Holidayland close?

    ---------- Post added 08-26-2012 at 08:35 AM ----------

Looks like Holidayland closed in September of 1961. So at the time of this first overhead picture above, Holidayland had about 5 months of life left.

The picture above is unique in that it also shows the construction of the Monorail Station and Monorail Bar at the Disneyland Hotel.

I may not comment everytime, but I do read over all of your threads with great interest in the history of the Disneyland Resort.

Great stuff as always Don! Seeing those Holidayland photos brings back memories of "Holidayland Anguish" -- a intensely distressful condition suffered by kids who were trapped for hours at a Holidayland picnic or other function put on by their parents' company. The condition was marked by frustrated whimpering and temper tantrums caused by hearing the whistles of the Mark Twain and SF&DRR and the gunshots from the Jungle Cruise, knowing the magic that was just on the other side of that berm, and being unable to go in!
"With the acquisition of Marvel and now of Lucasfilm,
Disney may have finally found the grail. You don't need
imagination or art. All you need is a brand."
