Considering its almost always a passenger who does it, then in my opinion yes those thing to protect passengers from themselves.

Seat belts, various lighting in the cabin, door on overhead bins, etc.

You just want to disagree and no answer will satisfy you.

Why anyone would argue over a safety change I will never understand, if the powers that be decide something would be safer or they find a way to potentially prevent something from happening, then why not do it?

Who gets to decide what is appropriate amount of risk for a person to encounter?

Are you saying people shouldn't be alowed to choose the less safe option for any reason?

No, because the conversation was not generically 'safety' but the conversation was safety to protect people from themselves. Again, airport security is not to protect you from yourself (unless you are some mentally unstable, bipolar person).

The key sentance from the earlier post was:
"The changes here were not to prevent an accident, but rather to protect people from themselves"

You came back with airport security checks and reenforced cockpit doors. Again - not things added to protect people from their own stupidity. I would accept any answer that actually countered the point - this does not.

Because often they go too far or are for overbearing reasons.

The Star Trek Experience in Vegas had a great live action setting that required people to move through dark hallways to simulate the ship under attack. Imagine 'safety improvements' that required the lights all to be on.. because we can't trust people to move through a dark space on their own feet. Safer? Yes. But still stupid and would make a great attraction a ghost of itself.
