"You can cut me off from the civilized world. You can incarcerate me with two moronic cellmates. You can torture me with your thrice daily swill, but you cannot break the spirit of a Winchester. My voice shall be heard from this wilderness and I shall be delivered from this fetid and festering sewer."
Interesting change. I like the simpleness of it before, but the newer one looks a bit more "monumental." I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing. I suppose I could go either way on it, but I do wonder why they made the change.
Exactly, PV. Think of all the money that was spent studying alternatives, which coatings were more durable, possible testing of coatings and colors, the meetings and discussions regarding color and graininess, buying the paint and possibly applicators, and paying a crew to apply it.
To what ultimate end?
Some recent college grad in Imagineering probably stumbled across a certain overused Walt quote about Disneyland never being completed as long as...

I think it looks terrible when you use a camera zoom and get a very up close pic of it.
The plaque is the same. There was a "nick" in the gold line above the "N" that you can see is still there (if you look closely in the newer pic)

If I were to speculate...
As in many "business" situations, someone got an idea that a more "durable" coating, while expensive to implement initially, would in the long run "save money" because the base would not have to be painted so frequently.
The original finish probably wore down, got stained, got nicked up by CMs when installing/refreshing flowers, etc. You can actually see in one of the close up photos that the old painted base has patches of uneven coating due to layers of paint.
So someone came up with a install cost vs lower maintenance cost PowerPoint chart and voila! Coated Partners Statue base!
The more I look at the coating, the more it reminds me of the coating they put on the parking lot tram seats. Just different color.![]()
but of all the colors choices, why gun metal grey? I think it breaks theming and sticks out like sore thumb in front of the castle. off hand, i can't of anything else in the park thats gun metal grey. I think its ugly. Like 1998 tomorrowland ugly. Oh well.
The old one looked like a slab of concrete anyway.
