This, exactly, a thousand times this. I continue to hold out hope that someday the ride will be returned to its former glory. I've hated the movie additions since day one, for many reasons but mostly because they smack of sheer commercialism and because they simply do not work with the ride. Pirates was a classic attraction, and one of the few that should have stayed true to Walt's vision. Maybe someday we will get to hear "No fear of evil curses" and the original and only "Strike your colors you bloomin' cockroaches" pirate again. Davey Jonessssssuuuhhhhhhhh and the 50 times that the words "Captain Jack Sparrow" are mentioned by every single character and those way-too-realistic Johnny Depp animatronics (and his bastardization of the Yo Ho song at the end) can die in a fire. Oh, and maybe it's just me, but it simply doesn't make sense that we are told that dead men tell no tales, only to have Davey Jonnessssuuuhhh and Blackbeard say "Oh wait! No they do tell tales! So says I!"

For me the mermaids in the water is not that bad....I'd rather that small 1 sec thing over jack in the ride...but the skeleton seems kinda...silly and not as fitting

To me the water effect is like the added treasure chest from the movies does not ruin the ride...or try to change the story and is so out of the way you can ignore it....unlike Jack, the mist screen and Barbosa

Good Lord Disney, when are the crass movie tie-ins going to stop?? I can't believe how much garbage has been going on with the Park lately. George Kalogridis needs to go as he obviously is a Disney yes man.

While I am cynical about changes inspired by the movie, I have to admit that if this change was made, and there hadn't been Pirates movies, I would have liked it. So I'll have to give thumbs up for this. However, I wouldn't mind the rest of the ride going back to its classic roots.

While I think that this effect in a way works for the WDW version of POTC, I think the mood of the new music fits the scene really well and the subtle mermaid effect add a foreboding sense to this part of the ride, which helps because the caves in the WDW version are so short. However the pacing of the ride in DL is very different and this would not work at all. There really is not a place for this to work...

I think the projection is ok. Although I think the mermaid skeleton is overkill.

The Mermaid thing is pretty cool and I think it would be cool in Disneyland...
But please not the song! It does not fit POTC at ALL!

I saw this for myself at WDW the other night and I liked it better than I thought I would. The mermaid projections/effect are secluded to the area after the mist screen and before the beach scene though you can hear their song throughout the cavern. It gives the opening scene a more foreboding vibe to it.

Love the song and the Mermaid idea and it might be added in. Don't see why they wouldn't add the effect since so much of the movies have been added in. If DLR execs deem it the next change, so be it. The song is truly beautiful and gives me chills when I hear it.

    Here's hoping it's a good change!

Why would you think George K. is to blame for this? This is at WDW.

WDW and DL's POTC are different-the scenes are different. In DL you go through the mist screen and are in the fort bombardment scene. The beach scene in DL is after the second drop which sloshes a lot of water around and would most likely render the effect useless. Besides, what does mermaids have to do with pirates ransacking and burning a spanish town? Also, the attraction has a sense of realism (the Jack Sparrow references notwithstanding) how are mermaids real? They aren't.

    Pre-emptive strike....

I don't doubt for a second that the thought is to install the mermaids in DL's POTC and everything I have seen, experienced, and read regarding Disneyland during his Presidency just smacks of a corporate yes man.
