I wasn't aware until now that there was a TV show planned based on the attraction, but I looked it up, and, although I have some reservations, I hope it's well done and entertaining.

Disney's Big Thunder Mountain to Be Adapted for TV

I'll admit, though, some related news is a tad... alarming:

Thunder Mountain is not the first Disney ride to receive the Hollywood treatment. The Pirates of the Caribbean attractions has spawned four blockbuster features starring Johnny Depp, while The Haunted Mansion, The Matterhorn, The Country Bears, Mission to Mars and Jungle Cruise and lately Mr. Toad's Wild Ride have been or are in development for the big screen.

The ultimate theme park movie might be Disney's Magic Kingdom, which is set entirely in the park. That project is being developed by writer Michael Chabon and director Jon Favreau.

I haven't read all the responses but 4 million doesn't seem like a lot. At my company which isn't anywhere near the giant Disney is typical enhancement projects run around 10-20 million dollars. So I would expect this to be more of a clean up only and few upgrades basically the ones already mentioned.

$4-million? Well, I guess they already have a surplus of Johnny Depp animatronics.

its amazing how this thread would have been different if the $4M number wasn't in the article at all. People have no reference point to what Disney spends on overhauls like this so they freak out because the only reference they have is their own value of money.. so they expect $4M to add all kinds of things.

People would freak out when they realize Disney spends that kind of money just to overhaul restaurants.. let alone massive E-ticket attractions with complex ride systems, acres of show, etc.

4M is nothing in Disney dollars.. considering they are doing track work, probably replacing all the track wood, redoing the station (which means dealing with ride control), and having to deal with new compliance issues.

There is no such requirement. There are rules about what constitutes new construction or renovations that must comply (that include percentages regarding the size of the job).. but no requirement that a percentage of budget must be applied to accessibility.

    Hi there!

My input comes from from having just had to meet the requirement in 2010/11. I know sometimes this kind of information is not readily available through an internet search BUT it is possible it was only part of our own local ordinance (I do not live in Anaheim). If so forgive me. I have contacted our Architect, to find out if it is local or state and if it has recently changed. I will update my post if so.

Is that for raw materials and construction or for development costs? Because a million seems pretty scant for that technology.

It's in this New York Times article (a fascinating look at ride building BTW). Also why the 4 million dollar number for the BTMRR refurbishment is probably way low in the final cost.

    1. Paint job: $500,000 to $1 million. We're not talking about a Home Depot paint job. WDI has been studying Bryce canyon and is basically doing a gigantic mural in high-tech paints (ceramic?) which will last a while.
    2. New Track. $2 million for fabrication, at least, plus maybe $200,00 for installation and testing.
    3. $500,000 to $700,000 for a widened queue, conservatively.

That is as much as $3.7 to $4.1 million right there!

Maybe they'll squeeze in $100,000 for upgraded effects. Plus they'll put in at least the infrastructure for the interactive queue, if not the whole thing.
$2.2m for a couple piece of replacement track? The cost is nowhere near that. B&M builds full-sized coasters for about $10m. The track might tip the scale at $1m at absolute tops.

Didn't see anything about BTMRR, this was about Toy Story Mania. Though I can see how the seeds for Mermaid were planted, according to Jay,

"Toy Story Mania, which carries a modest price tag compared with some other Disney efforts, demonstrates one way that the company is fighting back, said Jay Rasulo, the chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

“Bigger and more expensive is not necessarily the answer,” Mr. Rasulo said. “You want people leaving thinking, ‘Wow, only Disney could do that.’ ”"

$40 million for Toy Story Mania, and about $45 million or so for Mermaid. Both built cheaply, i.e. not "bigger and more expensive", yet showcasing a little bit of pixiedust, i.e. a smattering of animatronics. I think with outsourcing animatronics, anybody could have done Mermaid. It's a pretty basic ride which recycles the omnimover.

I like Toy Story Mania a moderate amount, it sort of isn't a dark ride in that you basically just shoot at screens. The only reason I ride on it is to see a little bit of the Toy Story theming, of which there isn't a whole lot outside of the game.

Let me see, Mermaid + Toy Story Mania = about $100 million spent on both.
Carsland = about $600 million spent.

Yeah, I think sometimes you need a decent budget to get it right. Sorry Mr. Rasulo, sometimes you do have to go "bigger and more expensive" to produce a quality attraction.

Just a guesstimate. But isn't all of the track going to be replaced and we're getting new ride vehicles?
