Flash Flood Rapids -- The One That Got Away

A former Imagineer opened up about an original idea for what eventually became "Grizzly River Run":

An Attraction called "Flash Flood Rapids," a whitewater-rafting ride with animatronics set in a flooded ghost town. You were dispatched from a breakaway wooden dam. Your raft washed through dynamite tents, a sinking ghost town with show scenes inside the buildings. In the buildings there was a card game to be played from the chandeliers, a bank robbery in progress, a flooded soap factory bubble machine dropping suds on you, etc. It ended by you being sucked down a flooded mine shaft.

Is this original concept a better idea than the actual finished product?

That sounds really interesting and like something I'd ride more than once, unlike GRR.

Its literally incomprehensible to me how someone can think GRR is superior to this. This sounds fascinating, creative and vastly more entertaining to GRR or any other existing Western movie property. It sounds like a viable ride for Frontierland too.

Obviously this concept is far superior to Grizzly. It could have easily become a Disney classic.

Sounds awesome...is there somewhere on the web that elaborates on this idea?

Wow! Now THAT could have been a classic Disneyland E-Ticket!

After a rather quick Google search, this is the only thing I could find. However, it looks like it was originally pitched to Knott's Berry Farm?

Imagineer Eddie Sotto talks about theme park ride design

In fact, OP, your exact quote is in this article only it relates to KBF.

That's a great interview. I've only read a few paragraphs of it and I can tell it's awesome.

I especially love this part -

Sotto: Knott's was really strange as it was so un-corporate. It was as if your next-door neighbor (whomever it is) decided to open their backyard up as a berry stand and a theme park.

Literally that is how the culture was when it came to operating it. You worked on "The Farm" as it was. It was frustrating at times as I was trying to apply the Disney quality and theme ethic to this person's backyard. I didn't have the mentality at first. But then it sunk in.

There was something about live chickens running in the parking lot that taught me that reality can be a more compelling theme, and soul a better product than faux paint and name tags. Knott's was more of a visit to grandma's house with all the mismatched decor and old paint than a slick "gotta see it all in 12 hours" park experience. It was laid back.

As far as the original idea for Flash Flood Rapids - sounds like it would have been a real winner. Of course, given who's running things (and certainly was back in the 90s), it's not at all surprising that they didn't want to invest in that level of creativity. "Good enough" is like a mantra with those folks. If they could get away with charging you $100 to shine a flashlight in your eyes and dump a bucket of water on you, they would.

Ah -- so it was taken out of context. Or perhaps it was also pitched to Disney.

Possibly. It seems as though it was just pitched to Knott's. Interesting nonetheless!

I think the water ride at my local Six Flags is better than GRR, so this is definitely superior to what we currently have.

Sotto's theme ideas would have been much too wild compared to the overall tone that Eisner wanted for DCA. Before Tower of Terror was built Mullholland Madness was the most zany & "over the top" themed attraction the park had.

The theme ideas are fine, the thrills-and-spills factor could have been designed to make the ride suitable for anything from families to thrillseekers. The problem with pitching it to Eisner is that he wanted cheap and quick no-brainers, not classic Disneyland-style originals.

It goes without saying that that sounds absolutely fantastic.
