Thanks for sharing. The boat ride looks like it would be more fun than the current submarines.

I agree Algernon, me too. What the hell was that green rubber stuff they used to coat the amusement parks with? I dont know if I would consider it pretty, but it definately gives me nostagia for every theme park trip I ever had as a kid.
thanx for sharing, always love to see long lost pics, I was 21 (in 91) before my first trip to the park, I always feel I missed out on so much.
Hi,
I am not trying to hijack the thread or anything, but if people would like to look at some more 1970's Disneyland pictures I posted some threads of them several years ago. Rather than repost the pics you can look at the threads here.
Pictures from 1974.

Bongo and Lulabelle are in the parade! I wish they had some presence in the new Storybook Circus. They are an obvious fit.
Count me in the smooth pavement-loving camp! I think that treatment is called "slurry". It always seemed to me such a nice, neutral "mat" to the Disneyland "painting". The current textured/pavered/cobblestoned stuff is just too busy. Well, some of the little touches of cobblestone are nice in Fantasyland, but for everyplace else , I much preferred the smooth blanketing of pavement -- almost zen-garden-like as they stretched out in that minimal yet soothing expanse. Ahhh....

I am on the fence with the pavement, i like the smoothness but I like the texture they have now. Blah!

Fun Fun Fun. The motor boat ride was fun.

The slurry that Disneyland used to have is no longer allowed due to environmental laws. The stuff was toxic. Though you can still find it at Tokyo Disneyland.
Gullywhumper is back on the Rivers of America!
these are wonderful; thanks for sharing! i particularly love the one of mickey and minnie looking all lovey dovey.
"oh, i just love happy endings!"
That's not true at all. It's not toxic or banned. The surface was asphalt with paint over it.
Disney has "upgraded" their surfaces throughout the park with pavers and or color treated concrete. The current surfaces require less maintenance than paint covered asphalt. They are also safer since paint covered asphalt tends to be slippery when wet.
However, many theme parks still use asphalt. Look around Knott's Berry Farm or Six Flags Magic Mountain for examples!
"Old" pictures of DL made AFTER my first visit. I'm such an old-timer now. I was 22 in 1979. I made my first visit in 1976.
