Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
Jim Hill reports that the Imagineers were able to perfect a Tinkerbell Drone aircraft but were not allowed to fly it above Disneyland Guests over objections from the Disney Legal Department. A new rumor claims that a self-contained Animatronic of Old Tink is being readied to fly via wire from the Matterhorn to a special area near the Fantasyland Castle.

Is this a good idea, or should the Imagineers be allowed to continue with their Tinkerbell Drone Project?
Re: Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
I'd rather Disney keep an actual human.

Same here. I love to watch the fireworks but I so enjoy waiting for Tinkerbell to come out and fly over the castle. The magic wouldn't be the same for me if it were changed.
Re: Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
I would probably be ok with this, if the tink would fly around and not just back and forth, and this can be done with Dumbo as well.
I doubt there is any truth in this rumor.
Re: Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
Was there ever a problem with using a real human? Don't fix what ain't broke.

That's how I feel. It just wouldn't feel the same if they started using an animatronic.
I don't believe this would happen, anyway.
Re: Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
Now that's a stupid Idea.
Re: Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
If they could make an animatronic Tinkerbell do this, I'll buy.

There are some short comings.
The huge cableway.
Can't fly in high wind.
The limits of only flying where the cable is.
If it could be bettered.
Re: Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
From my understanding of the Jim Hill article (from 2000), this was an idea that wound up inspiring Light Magic. Back in the 80s, when they were brainstorming replacements for the MSEP, the imagineers did a test with a little mockup Tinkerbell dangling from a remote control helicopter. I don't think it was ever supposed to be animatronic, just a little, fairy-sized figure dangling from a little remote helicopter. Of course, the lawyers killed it, and eventually we wound up with Light Magic instead.

You'd have the same problems with an animatronic Tink flying. I don't think the FAA would allow a Tinkerbell drone to be flown over Disneyland.
Re: Will an Animatronic Tinkerbell Fly Above Disneyland?
Getting rid of the cable would be cool.

I read something like this about a month ago. Each Tinker Bell gets paid something like $700 per "flight" to frontierland. It sounds like fun. I have zipped lined before. Maybe instead of pulling out my credit card to reup my AP, they could just make me fly for one night a year. Although, leaping from a fake mountain sounds pretty intimidating.
