The newer CMOS sensors are just amazing. I upgraded from a D50 (which took amazing pictures) to a D5100 (which has Sony's simply amazing Cmos sensor in it (it's the same one in the D7000). And the high ISO levels are silly clean.
Years ago (when I bought my D50), CMOS was considered inferior to CCD for noise reasons... now CMOS has leapfrogged over CCD. Put some fast glass in front of them and it's mind blowing how good of shots you can now get.

But... nice thing is you own the glass with your D80... look around at places like Cameta Camera (I highly recommend), B&H, and Adorama who sell Nikon Factory Refurbs of bodies for half price or less of new (and they're like-new condition, with a factory Nikon-USA warranty). It's a great way to upgrade for a fraction of the price of new... (and for the record my "refurb" D5100 had a total of 135 shots taken with it...).

Now also remember, the 5D Mark III is a "full frame" sensor... it takes in a TON of light compared to prosumer level cameras... but the newer sensors still are better than they were just a few years ago.

Wow. You've got the hang of dark-rides! I need more practice.

You got a used camera with 135 shots run through it? Heck, I do that in a couple of hours when I take it out to shoot. That's amazing.

The canon loyalty program allows you to buy refurbd cameras in exchange for a used canon camera. I bough a 5D Mark II a couple of years ago for $1500 when they couldn't be had for less than 2k, it had 33 clicks when I recieved it.. You can get a 60D for around $600 these days.

Both of the big boys treat their customers well... (especially at the pro level) they don't make much for the body, it's all about the Glass... that's where the money is. =-)

I find the Factory Refurbs are sometimes better than new... they go through a complete QC rundown, anything with any sign of wear is replaced, and a tech does a complete check/recalibration... and most of them were either returns still in the box/used once (but they had to check them out), or "demo" units sent for reviews. In fact my last two cameras, and my last 3 lenses have been refurbs... The key is "Factory" and not 3rd party.

Wow, those are amazing photos! I wish my point and shoot could take pictures at least 10% of the quality of yours

Ah.... I was wondering, glad someone else asked the details! Incredible! Those are some of the nicest dark ride shots I've seen!!

Wow! Great shots. Thanks for the tec. data too, it's a good starting point.
I'm looking at a Nikon D5100 in the near future. Would a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens be a good entry level for low light shots like this?

Well, it's going to be more zoomed in compared to the 28mm or 35mm. If you want something like what the OP posted, definitely something closer to the 30mm range (probably 35mm f/1.8). I use a 50mm f/1.8, but while good, it is a bit harder to use since it's much more zoomed in.
