The MGM Wizard of Oz is timeless. But they own the rights to all of that.

If Disney do an OZland, based on ownership/rights, it will not have any references or appearances to the MGM Classic, only what is in the books and the upcoming film(s). Just to clear things up from what everyone is saying here.

The upcoming film has a sequence that lends itself to a water ride.

With utterly forgettable characters such as Tic Toc and a scary looking Dorothy played by Fairuza Balk.

Don't forget the talking chicken. Quality filmaking at its finest.

I think a Lone Ranger theme would do well for that area of the park.

I always liked the idea of the Geyser Mountain attraction they once planned. The Neverland Files: Geyser Mountain

I don't think Oz or Lone Ranger are strong enough themes to attach themselves to Disneyland.

What is not to like about the lone ranger? Everything about a new subland based on it would practically be unique and generic Frontierland in all but name and maybe one attraction if that. Win win if you ask me.
In the quest for quality, I have no problem with the characters footing the bill.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Lone Ranger as one of many characters in an expanded area that could pay tribute to other Western legends such as Davy Crockett, Zorro, Pecos Bill, the characters from the American Legends shorts, etc. Real western characters, not Sheriff Woody. I wouldn't want an area just dedicated to Lone Ranger though.

You do know that's actually taken from the Ozma of Oz book, don't you?

Ya. And Return to Oz was mostly taken from The Marvelous Land of Oz, but the Tip character was replaced by Dorothy and they left out the sex changing Ozma. That dumb chicken was something else they could have done without.
