Walt Disney playing with a friend's backyard train, 1948

Rare footage of Walt Disney playing with backyard trains in 1948

Footage from 65 years ago today. Does what it says on the tin.

That was a lot more enjoyable to watch than I thought it would be! Very cool.

I love seeing old footage of Walt, especially doing something he loved.

Walt sure did love him some trains. People say Disneyland was built by a mouse. I think it was a train.

I'll second that. The mouse made the money but when making a park, the train's influence is much bigger. How many trains can you find in Disneyland?

    1) Disneyland RR
    2) Monorail
    3) Casey Jr.
    4) Big Thunder
    5) Horse Drawn carriage if you count the tracks it runs on

I seem to recall a lot of other train references around the park. Mr. Toad ends up doing a head-on into a train,

Exactly right. And then one day he gets the idea to build a miniature train in his backyard, complete with train station that he borrowed from the set of one of his movies. There is the seed for scaling and theming.

I feel as though I may have been born in the wrong era! I would much rather have the chance to meet Walt Disney than any of today's celebrities
    Such an awesome guy!

Glad you included that. I like to think of it as WD's "Future Train."

Don't forget the trains of Yesterland, specifically the Viewliner and the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland.

Walt found out that there were a lot of large scale model railroaders working for him. Besides Ward Kimball, there was Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston that were involved in the hobby.
