What the heck is this doing in Disneyland?

This past weekend, I was at Disneyland and was waiting to ride the Disneyland Railroad at the Frontierland (New Orleans Square) station.

I was looking around from the elevated platform at the river, the Haunted Mansion, and the musicians playing outside the French Market restaurant.

But when I looked back towards the roofs at the center of New Orleans Square, I saw white sails and ship's masts above the roof line (see picture below).

Maybe the answer is obvious, but can someone tell me what this is, and what it's doing in the area above New Orleans Square?

I thought of the places where there should be a ship in the park (on the Rivers of America), and the location was definitely not right. A ship in a parade in Main Street would have to be massive to be so high above the roof line. Maybe some special event going on in the esplanade? But I didn't see anything when got off the train at the Main Street station.

One of my friends suggested that I look it up on the satellite view of Google Maps, but I couldn't find anything that looked like ship sails in the central area of New Orleans Square. So I am guessing this was something temporary, or at least not something that was there three or four years ago when they last took images for Google Maps.

Does anyone know what this might be?

It's a ship, it is part of the set at NOS. Many people don't know it is there.

Isn't it possible (even likely or expected) that there are other ships in New Orleans?

It is a ship in the port of New Orleans. It has been there for as long as I can remember. It is always fun to look around and see all the little hidden background items in the park.

One of the many gems that show that the details are still alive and well in the Magic Kingdom.

Yep! It's been there for years. Here's an image from Google Maps, with the rigging actually marked with a green circle. It actually is on top of one of the two "Pirates" show buildings.Fake Ship Masts On The POTC Building Photo by STowler | Photobucket

That "ship" has been up there behind the roofline for a few decades. The masts are painted regularly, the sails are cleaned and refitted annually, and it's been very well maintained for years. (As you can see in the pic.)

It's a famous piece of Imagineering, and is meant to be seen from the alleys of NOS, although you can see it from the train station.

Aye, Isn't the new Orleans port on the other side of the town? the river is just a river, all the ships are on the other side. That's why you can see the sails.

I never noticed this being there. I'll have to keep my eye out for it next week.

I've never seen the "ship" before, either. Very cool, I will look out for it the next time I'm at the park. If I can remember, that is.

Re: What the heck is this doing in Disneyland?

Thank you, everyone, for your help. I really can't believe I never noticed this before, although a search on Google seems to indicate that the sails were added to the New Orleans Square roof area in the 1990s.

I found this earlier thread on MiceChat: Has anyone else seen this???

There seemed to be disagreement in the thread about whether the purpose of the sails was to hide lighting structures, or for theming purposes.

When you're in NOS, and you're back far enough, you will see that the sails are used to cover up lighting elements.
