Cakvalasc, If I understand it correctly it's a bundled fiber-optic cable that has to be assembled by hand so the image that goes in from a projection lens at one end comes out right on the other end, like a borescope. Not cheap to build.
From all the moving and flexing it'll start degrading as the individual fibers start snapping one at a time.
And knowing Disney they only have it budgeted for replacement once a year, and if they fail faster Leota gets grounded (and uses the old direct system) till the money is allotted for the next one. I'm guessing, but tell me I'm wrong...
