Actually, rumor is a guest said they saw an ODV employee putting dry ice into a plastic bottle. Just look on YouTube for dry ice bombs and there are a plethora of Funniest Home Videos wannabes.

    I'm guessing either a) a stupid prank, or b) a disgruntled employee.

    Re: Explosion at Toontown (05/28/13)

Speaking of eyeball-grabbing hyperbole, here's CNN's version of the Gotcha Game. The alarming front page headline:

    Disneyland evacuated after blast

After you click on the headline, here's what you get:

(CNN) -- It wasn't exactly Disney magic.

It seemed more sinister at the time, when a trash can exploded at Disneyland on Tuesday evening, prompting the evacuation of the Mickey's Toontown section for a couple of hours

"Upon initial investigation, it appears it was a plastic bottle with dry ice in it that had exploded," said Sgt. Bob Dunn of the Anaheim Police Department in California.

The development left visitors startled and a bit shell shocked.

"Just a big boom and the trash can exploding ... the lid coming up ... people were at a standstill," Vanessa Vasquez told CNN affiliate KCBS. "It was kind of a little scary when I saw the whole area (look like a) ghost town."

Others said the sound is a rarity in the area.

"It was very tense at the moment it happened because you don't expect to hear that sound at Toontown," said Allen Wolf, another Disney visitor.

"In an abundance of caution, the area was evacuated," Disneyland said on its official Twitter account. "There were no injuries and no reported damage."

Toontown got the all clear to reopen a few hours later.
"With the acquisition of Marvel and now of Lucasfilm,
Disney may have finally found the grail. You don't need
imagination or art. All you need is a brand."

Again, can't reiterate this enough, please let the media know on their pages how irresponsible this behavior is.

Shocked they still allow water bottles and liquids past security. This was a needed wake up call.

    Re: Explosion at Toontown (05/28/13)

How long would it take for dry ice in a water bottle to explode? I would expect it would be quick... shorter than how long it would take for someone to go through bag check, main gate, and back to Toontown.

My guess is it was not brought in by a guest, and as many have suggested it came from within the park. This would negate the concerns about a failure of bag check in this particular instance.

While Occam's razor would tend to suggest it came from an inside source (dry ice and water bottles are both easily found in the park) it's not like bringing in a chunk of dry ice past "security" would be at all difficult. Just wrap it in a couple of paper towels and stick it in your pocket. You would only need a chunk smaller than a roll of pennies.

Bag check is Security Theater. It's there to:
    A) Make guests feel safer without actually making them safer
    B) A CYA for Corporate, "Hey we did everything we could" *wink* *wink*
    C) Discourage people from bringing in there own food which boost in park sales.

Yeah, this was not some mastermind mission impossible stealth assault type thing.

    A) If was brought in via the main gate.
You don't screw the cap down tight until just before you drop it in the trash can. Gives you all the time you need.

    OR

    B) Some board OVD kid says to himself hey, I've got dry ice and a water bottle, heh, heh.... *pop*!

I'm surprised the over the top reporting doesn't say " they tried to get away but it picked um up with its mind power and shook um like an ice bomb " some real over the top reporting going on. Got everyone calling to see if we're okay over here.

Thanks. It was a thought, based on past experience.

After Boston, I am surprised they allow backpacks into the park.
"And yes, we implore EVERYBODY to follow the park rules. Having off-ride footage is great, but any still photo's or video's taken ON the coasters at SFMM are strictly against the rules. They are there for your (and everybody's) safety." "Six Flags doesn't allow ANY loose articles on their coasters, and they don't allow video taping on their coasters. " BUT, " This is not true. Six Flags does not allow ANY On-Ride video or pictures on the rides. The ONLY way is if you get explicit permission from Park Management." ???

Disallowing backpacks would cut park attendance by a huge amount.
