It wasn't ground braking, but it was good for what it was. A prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
That being said, I think an entire land would be a little much. Even though Oz was originally going to be apart of Disneyland. (I think.) Anyway, all I really want is a Theadora face character. I mean who wouldn't want to see the Wicked Witch of the West at Disneyland?

It might be. But why wouldn't it be just as promising to develop something new? Maybe extend Frontierland and put in the long-gestating Western River Expedition or Geyser Mountain?

Tony Baxter said it himself those 2 attractions were just POTC doubles which wouldn't work in the long run ! Having 3 similar attractions!

And Matterhorn, Space Mountain and Big Thunder are all entirely individual and unique attractions? Pirates and Small World have no linkage? The entire Fantasyland/Winnie the Poo dark ride suite are all unique ride systems? Rocket Jets/Dumbo?

The fact that the same *style* of ride exists in the same park so far hasn't precluded differently themed variants from being built.

Oz Land and Attraction Planned for Disneyland

DbM has it from reliable sources that our friends at Imagineering are finishing up concept and show design for an Oz land (or area) and Oz attraction based on the movie Oz the Great and Powerful.

Where else can I ride Mystic Manor and Grizzly Mountain?

Sounds interesting. I will wait for a official announcement. I definitely think a new land would be a welcome addition!

Please don't say because they have different names, buildings, and mountain shapes that they are ENTIRELY different attractions. The concepts are so close as to be indistinguishable even if the façade and layouts are different.

One is a western train roller coaster, the other is the park haunted house. The concepts are more similar than they are different. Just like basing on a move - little conceptualizing for something entirely new is involved.

this rumor comes up from time to time for that space. I wouldn't trust it until they start building it.

The *original* MGM movie is still covered. THAT they would need special rights for, and I'm absolutely certain they at least have the rights to have the characters present in one FL ride.
If I'm understanding your question correctly, it seems you already answered it. Disney uses the Wizard of Oz figures, music and sets in The Great Movie Ride because it was able to make special deals with MGM (or whoever the powers that be were). However, I believe that was a one-time deal. To do so again would mean another big, legal deal to be made with lots of lawyers and stuff.

I've heard of lots of rumors about Disney's latest big movie being planned for a new attraction/land: Everything from Oz, Lone Ranger, Tron. It seems to me that their problem is they are banking these plans on the possible success of the movies, instead of allowing Imagineers to design attractions which would hold up on their own. They really need to abandon this narrow type of thinking.
