Where to Retire -- Anaheim or Florida?

I would like to retire in two years. I grew up in Southern California and can think of plenty of reasons NOT to retire there, especially on a limited fixed income, but I would rather be a Little Old Lady Who Lives In A Shoe with a Chihuahua and an AP than live in a retirement home in, say, Wisconsin.

And I have never been to Florida...

Anaheim: lots of nice places, but gang members the size of football players.

Florida: lots of nice places, but mosquitoes the size of gang members.

    I'd go for Montana.

I don't think I could ever leave SoCal, I have known it my whole life, the weather is almost always perfect, and I just love it all around. Anaheim for sure! But I wouldn't mind owning one of those homes on WDW property

I've lived in the Midwest and Southern California. Though I've never lived in FL, I've spent a good amount of time there on business.

My choice would be Southern California, even on a fixed income. If I couldn't afford So Cal, I would live in the Midwest and visit So Cal and East Coast as often as possible. My last choices for retirement would be FL and TX, largely because of the heat and humidity but also because it's just not a mindset and community I'm excited about.

I'd say spend a little time visiting there and see what you think. Cost of living will generally be less than SoCal, but this varies by area, so that's a general yardstick only. The weather will not be as nice. Neither location will have you digging your car from under snow, but Florida gets brutally hot, stays that way for long stretches, and is very humid besides.

Generally you'll find more things to do in California, but that shouldn't be seen as a knock on Florida. There's more to do in Cali than almost anywhere else in the US.

One thing I wouldn't use as a decision-maker is Disney. I've spent plenty of time at both WDW and DLR, and both of them will easily provide many, many happy hours to while away in your golden years.

So Cal. Because the weather is better than in Florida. And the level of medical is better too - something to think about as you get older. It is more populated so there is a lot more access to specialized care.

Except the winters in Montana can be killer.... I remember being in Missoula one winter and it was 35 below 0...

I'd say make a trip to Florida first and maybe talk to some people who live there. Get a feel for the pros and cons of Florida life. We have several MiceChatters who live there, they could probably give you some info.

If I ever hit the lottery personally I'd have my "winter" home closer to Disneyland. Probably not Anaheim since I can't stand being in a city for to long at a time... then again I've never been to Florida either.

California. There are so many places in SoCal and they are all different, so if you don't dig Anaheim, you could live elsewhere in the OC or the greater SoCal area. Plus:

    a. More to do. Access to LA, San Diego and Riverside, which all have a lot going on.
    b. Less humidity.
    c. No hurricanes, pythons or gators.
    d. Blue state (this is a plus for me; it might be a minus for others)
    e. Growing mass transit - if you couldn't drive for some reason there would be more ways to get around (particularly if you were in the LA area or San Diego)
    f. Our ocean is bigger.

I don't like Florida. Too many invasive species (humans) trying to not coexist with the wildlife. And then, you get lots of wildlife in your house, yard, vehicle.. etc. Biggest freaking flying cockroaches I have ever seen. Geckos everywhere (cute, but annoying).

actually, I know someone whose dog was eaten by a gator in their backyard...and they've been having a rush of pythons lately. Point remains, we don't have the suckers.

While I love DL over MK... Floridia isn't too bad, California is a tough place to retire due to the costs and taxes... one of the reasons Florida is such a destination, but there are trade-offs... like no mountains, muggy weather and such.

it really depends in anaheim...there are a lot of bad areas in the city...

yes, almost every city has bad areas, but anaheim has a ton of them especially near disneyland

i worked and lived there for over 20 years, and i wouldnt recommend anyone to live there unless it is anaheim hills...i would recommend finding another city close by....
