One thing I had never noticed about Disney's dedication speech...

He sounds as if he's trying to hold back tears. His voice, though powerful and clear, sounds incredibly emotional.

By all accounts it was a very emotional day for Walt, who had risked everything to turn his creative vision into a reality. Another MiceChat poster recently cited the Annette biography, which describes Walt in tears as he looked out the window of his Main Street apartment and saw the first guests entering Disneyland.

And that's I guess the difference between DCA (or any other park) and Disneyland.

Disneyland: "This is was dream, I can go bankrupt any second, I risked it all and now it's here. I built it. I did it. I gave it all, I hope they come.".

DCA: "Hmm, maybe I could have spent a couple thousand less somewhere.. I mean, my Christmas bonus! We did overspend... next time we are going a cheaper route, suckers are going to come in, anyway".

DCA: "Let's just buy some off the shelf rides and use the name Disney to sell it to the public. The sheep will still come en masse and never know the difference."

That's interesting, I had always thought it was just the quality of the sound back then, but I can see that.

This is painful to read, since it really says so much about how far the attitudes of the company have sunk.

Being a Pollyana optimist at times, I'm waiting for the turn around when the last of the Eisnerites has quit/been fired/retired and replaced with a Disney employee who's worked her way up the ladder.

Soon, please! I'm happy to join you on the Pollyanna bandwagon. Hoping against all reason, some days.

Love, love, LOVE Disneyland's dedication speech. He was very emotional that day. There's always that story of Walt Disney and one of the Mouseketeers (can't remember which one) in his apartment on Main Street on opening day, looking out the window and crying. Love that story.
