Angry What does Disney do if I get food poisoning?

I went to DCA this past weekend and ate at the Taste Pilot Grill for the first time in years. All members of our party on Sunday who ate the burger got food poisoning. We informed Disney but wanted to know if there is anything they would do? Has anyone else experienced this? Any insight would be helpful!

At this point if you complained formally online and in physical format (i.e., letters and emails) you *might* get a formal letter of apology.

"Food poisoning" is an incredibly loosely applied term in recent years. You'd likely need a full public relations onslaught to get any traction, and unless you have medical records/hospital visit backing up that it was in fact a foodbourne illness that got you... it becomes your word vs theirs.

You can report issues with suspected food poisoning here:

Orange County, California - Foodborne Illness

I would guess, but don't know for sue, that once they reach a threshold of complaints only then will they take action. Please let us know what they end up telling you.

What do you want to happen?
Are you looking for reimbursement or some sort compensation from Disney? I'm sure they would want something to prove it was food poisoning and/or it was caused from a Disney food establishment.

From experience dealing with the LA version of this, a certain level of complaints triggers an inspection. If the inspection finds nothing amiss, nothing further likely happens. If they do find anything, they would issue whatever corrective actions necessary and go from there.

Don't remember - do Disneyland restaurants post letter grades?

It's very difficult to get a health dept to do anything about a case like this unless there's lots of people affected. It could also be caused just by handling a common utensil or door handle and then not washing or sanitizing your hands.

OC restaurants do not use the grading system unfortunately.

OC Restaurants use a pass / fail system with results posted in the window (obviously just pass).

The oc health dept site had previously posted the results of the most recent health inspection for a facility. Perhaps they still are?

If anything you will be referred to park safety to file a claim. If there are enough claims it would spark an inspection. In order for anything substantial you would need proof of doctors visits and/or hospital visits proving it was a foodborne pathogen. I highly doubt you would be offered any sort of compensation or free days. I would still encourage you to alert them just so they are aware of it.

OP, when did you get the food poisoning? Usually that happens within a few hours, not the night of or the day after. 2-6 hours, says the NYT.

Re: What does Disney do if I get food poisoning?

It's gross to bring it up, but what are you defining as food poisoning? Was everyone vomiting and/or having diarrhea?
Also, what else did you guys eat throughout the day? Were there any other instances of members of your group eating the same food or similar items? It might not have been the burgers at Taste Pilots Grill, but if it was did you notice the meat being undercooked? Were any of the toppings rotten?

It could have been anything. If you were touching railings and didn't wash your hands you could get a short-lived bug. If you ate something that contained a single item not being prepped properly (which is possible at multiple locations) could make you sick.
It is the park's responsibility to make sure their food products are at standard, but you always should check your food before you eat it. If you bite into a burger that isn't cooked all the way, take it back. If you notice something doesn't taste right, take it back. If you notice rotten/soggy tomatoes or vegetables, take it back.

Re: What does Disney do if I get food poisoning?

Since you are using the term "food poisoning", you went to the ER to have it on record, as they need to run tests to rule out norovirus and rotavirus, which are much more common than food poisoning. Food Poisoning is relatively rare. It is not common. More often, what someone thinks of as food poisoning is actually norovirus.

Re: What does Disney do if I get food poisoning?

To this day I have never had food poisoning that I know of, which, I agree with Malcon that food poisoning is a rare thing to happen just in general. But if you all ate a burger at the same place and all got similar symptoms afterwards, I can understand that you probably think it originated at that eating establishment. Food poisoning symptoms usually come on quite quickly almost out of nowhere, but can mimic stomach flu symptoms which makes it tough to point any fingers in a certain direction. Especially when you were in a highly public place and 'tis the season for sickness after all.

I have eaten at Pizza Port three times. All three times myself and my group came down with food poisoning. We all wound up in the local ER and had a diagnosis. All three times. So needless to say we now avoid Pizza Port like the plague. We did let Disneyland know each time and they took reports, but we never heard anything else from it.

Not to get graphic, but the symptoms were all on the lower end including cramping. The issue of why we thought it was food poisoning was because while all 7 in our group ate there, only 5/7 got ill. The two that didn't had the chicken sandwich. All toppings were shared as well as the fries. I found the burger unappealing after only a few bites.
