    Jolly Rodger - POTC Question

I noticed something about POTC the last time I was in the park... And it never really occured to me... They use three differant sents of Jolly Rodgers in the ride which indicate three differant pirates...

Now for those of you who need a little history... Pirates used the Jolly Rodger when they where willing to give quarter to those they met... So it was their normal standard... (it was not their battle standard which was a red flag...)

Each pirate captain created their own Jolly Rodger standard...

The Scull and Crossed Sabers belonged to a pirate called "Capt. Calico Jack Rackham"

The solo Scull and Crossed Bones belonged to a pirate named "Capt. Emmanuel Wynne" This was also used as an eliment of "Capt. Jean-David Nau" who used three in succession

The Scull sitting on Crossed Bones belonged to a pirate named "Capt. Edward England" (However this was also used as an eliment on the standard for "Capt. Christopher Moody" but incorporated other elements...) This theme is used on hats primarly on the ride and not on a standard...

My question is, which pirate is the ride based on? And is each unique and separate...

And more over is "Capt. Jack Sparrow" a fictional version of "Calico Jack?"

    Discuss...

Calico Jack had the coolest flag, so I'm not surprised that Disney swiped it for Sparrow (I'm a little disappointed that they didn't come up with something original, though). He was a pretty pathetic pirate, though, so apart from sharing a first name, I don't think Sparrow's much inspired by Rackham.

(Rackham's claim to fame is sailing with the two women pirates, Anne Bonney and Mary Read, and for hiding belowdecks while the women fought attacking soldiers up above. After their capture, Bonney supposedly said to Rackham, "If you had fought like a man, you need not have been hung like a dog." Oh SNAP)

I'd guess bits and pieces of various pirates found their way into PotC. I always assumed the captain of the ship attacking the fort (does he have a name?) was directly inspired by Blackbeard, although Blackbeard's unique flag is nowhere to be seen.

That is right, blackbeard's (or "Capt. Edard Teach") standard is not there, however, in battle it didn't have to be... They could be flying the pirate flag of No Quarter... Which was a Blood Red standard... And since one of the masts in the ride has fallen, it could be that is the case...

For those of you who don't know Blackbeard's Jolly Rodger standard is is a skelliton stabing a heart with an arrow...

I always found it Ironic that even though Blackbeard was the pirate that we associated as "looking like a pirate"... his standard isn't what people use...

I did notice this however... Calico Jack's standard is at the beginning of the ride and at the end of the ride... Wynne's standard is in the pirate hold and on many of the hats... England's standard is the projection through the water fall and on many of the hats as well...

Funny ... I thought the name JACK from JACK SPARROW came from the fact that it is Johnny Depp's son's name?!?! Guess I was off!
