The hatbox ghost was originally a ghost that had a cane and a top hat who held a hat box in his hand. His head was supposed to disappear and reappear in the hat box but they could never get the effect to work correctly so it was removed shortly after the mansion's opening and replaced with the current bride in the attic.

I'd love to see the Hatbox Ghost, but I'll actually believe it's returning only when I've seen it with my own eyes.

There have been rumors about ol' Hatty coming back to the Mansion for years! But I think he will return soon, after all they unveiled a HBG animatronic at the D23 expo, so that should tell us that he will be back soon.

I think it's bound to happen at some point. It's just a matter of when.

I'd call it extremely unlikely at this point, when they can make money just by putting him on merchandise, and even if comes back - not sure that's even the best course of action at this point, given the 'strength' of the idea of the character is strong graphic design/spookiness and the 'mystery' and absence. Hard potentially to capture the strong spooky essence implied by years of being gone in a single AA figure that satisfies both hardcore fans and the 'casual' guest who doesn't know the first thing about him.

If the film reboot is focusing on him, it only makes sense that they would be prepared to put him into the mansion...at some point.

I'm still most inclined to think he'll be a go to tie into the movie, same as how POTC additions in recent years have been movie tie-ins.

honestly, I'm getting worried about that movie, it and Magic Kingdom were both announced in what, summer 2010 or summer 2011?? And yet we've seen ZERO movement on either film, personally I'd rather see those get made then some of the other ones.

As far as I know, it isn't happening in the near future. Guillermo Del Toro has stated that he would like to focus on other projects he has going on right now so the Haunted Mansion movie has been shelved indefinitely. That being said, del Toro is a fan of the mansion and he said he will try and revisit the idea again when he gets a chance.

I would love to see him return, but I want it to be before the movie (if it's ever made).People need to know that he's a rich part of Disney history, not just some character from a movie.

People who rode it yesterday are saying no.

When did he say this? In July interviews for Pacific Rim, so about 6 months ago, he said:

I’m such a Disneyland fanatic. I need to get an update on what’s happening with Haunted Mansion.GDT: Yeah, we are still pursuing a writer that is very hard to get. We are meeting with them. The problem is I don’t want just anyone to rewrite the screenplay. I wrote the screenplay with Mathew Robbins and I really want somebody that will bring a lot to it, but Disney is aching to make it and I’m aching to make it. If we could… If you know of anyone who can write, because I’m only going to produce it, I would love to hear.
I went to Disneyland with a ten year old who had never been to Disneyland before last week and he went on all the thrill rides, he went on Screamin’… but his favorite ride was the Haunted Mansion.
GDT: That’s incredibly heartening for me. That is really beautiful.

If it's been shelved, he must have done a 180 in the last few months. Magic Kingdom is the one I think that seems to be sort of lost in the shuffle.
