    Rainforest Cafe gluten free?

BFF got a $50 gift card. I've never eaten at a Rainforest Cafe.

I know they don't have a GF menu, but have heard they will accommodate. My concern is cross contamination.

Celiacs, what has been your experience? Will I be safe eating there?

    Re: Rainforest Cafe gluten free?

I don't have celiac, but I do have a serious food allergy. My experience there was very good. As soon as I told the server about the allergy he got very serious, and I think possibly took our order on a different notepad/ticket than the one he had originally? (I might be remembering that bit wrong). Anyway, he paused, and said they take allergies very seriously there and have a separate prep area and they take extra precautions to prevent cross-contamination.

So, while I can't speak specifically to your condition/concern, it seems like they probably have a process in place. You could always call and ask to be sure.

I can echo theatermouse's experience. I don't have Celiac but I have a very serious shellfish allergy. When I told the server at Rainforest, they sent over a different staff member who wrote the order on a bright yellow pad and spent some time discussing what they could do and what would be safe for me to eat. They said they would be putting my order into a separate oven and preparing it in a separate area, so they did seem to be really conscious of cross-contamination. It might be worth a phone call in advance to see exactly what they can do for gluten, but given the fact that they do seem to take allergies and food sensitivities very seriously, I'm guessing they might be able to work with you.

Oh, I'm definitely planning on talking to them. But as most of us with food intolerances or allergies know, what you are told vs the actual experience may differ.

I've had places assure me they understand food allergies, etc, etc then brought my food out with a nice slice of bread on top of it. Brought it to the server's attention, who told me to just take the bread off (with eye roll). Once I had a server tell me "It's ok, it's not wheat bread, it's WHITE bread".

So it's always good to hear from people with allergies/intolerances who've actually eaten at a place I'm going to eat at. Thanks. Sounds like they do take things seriously.

Oh yeah, some restaurants can be awful about it. I've had servers give me eye rolls when I've asked about cross-contamination/etc. It's like, "yeah, excuse me for not wanting to have an allergic reaction and possibly die..."

I think the ones in Disneyland or Downtown Disney would probably be more on the ball as a rule, simply because of Disney's reputation for being friendly to those with medical issues of any kind. I would hope so, anyway!

I don't have celiac, but I do have a severe lemon allergy. I eat at Rainforest all the time. There is a dish there with lemon in it that I absolutely love. When I explain the allergy to the server they have ALWAYS had the chef come out. He will discuss it with me and then make me the dish with no lemon and has always assured me that there would be no cross contamination. They have been excellent to work with (Same with every restaurant in DLR as well). So I think you will be fine.

I don't know about gluten free, but the food at the Rainforest Cafe is the worst in the resort. Use the gift card on a couple of t-shirts or something and eat somewhere good like the Storyteller's Cafe (I can attest that they can make almost anything gluten free there).

    Re: Rainforest Cafe gluten free?

Thanks for the info everyone. I feel pretty safe eating there now.

Big D, I've heard good and bad. BFF has eaten at the one in SF and she said it was good. Don't know if it's a quality issue with the one in DTD or not. It's her gift card & a free meal is a free meal. If it turns out not so good, at least it didn't come out of our pocket. Maybe being GF there will be a plus since I'll probably be eating something off the regular menu.

Well, to be fair, I have only eaten there once in 2000 right when it opened, so perhaps it has gotten better in the last 14 years, however I've never known anyone that has eaten there that liked it.
