    Possible Little Mermaid ride refurb

From the main page of MiceChat

    Editor’s Note:
    • January 30, 2014: Disneyland back in the swim of things – The refurbishment for DCA's Little Mermaid ride we'd told you about in a Miceage Update last year is now back on. Burbank is beginning to loosen purse strings for Anaheim at least, while Orlando remains on a very short fiscal leash due to MyMagic+ cost overruns. DCA's Mermaid refurb is currently slated for seven weeks from late March to early May and will fix a laundry list of cosmetic, lighting and scenery issues throughout the ride. No word yet how they'll budget this Mermaid rehab for WDW's version, much less schedule it. WDW's version of Soarin' is also in refurb purgatory, while DCA's Soarin' closes next month for a big HD upgrade.

I am personally in favor of this happening. What are your thoughts?

I'm for it, I was at the park a couple weeks ago and during the "Under the Sea" scene Ariel's torso had come detached from her fin at the waist area and you could see into her inner workings from the side I was thinking "Um... They need to tune that up before some kid freaks out.." :P

I agree. That's bad show right there.

I am in favor of the Ariel refurb. Interesting he mentions the Soarin refurb as well because it looks like that one may also be delayed at DLR. Someone on another site mentioned their discussion with a CM about it being put off. Now, low and behold, it is no longer listed on the DL park hours page OR the interactive map as going down.

Reading this, I think most of us let out a collective sigh of relief. Ariel is a huge component of DCA, even if most don't realize it. It is a people-eating machine, short lines, moves a lot of people through it, and all that. But it is also key in that is one of a very few "classic" Disney dark rides. It could be argued that Disneyland's charm comes from the Fantasyland dark rides. The more charm brought to DCA, the better. And lastly, Ariel is an attraction enjoyed by all ages. Very important to appeal to multiple generations. Very, very happy to hear of the refurbishment.

I think this is great. It's an underwhelming attraction but has potential. I think the lightning in the "Under the Sea" room seriously needs to be toned down; it's so bright, you become aware of every effect within a few seconds. A little more kinetic energy with light effects would solve a lot! :-)

As long as they don't rush a refurb in the next week I don't care what they do with Little Mermaid. I like the ride and go on in plenty of times whenever I visit, but there is a lot of room for improvement. Especially the Under the Sea scene.
Please... put Guardians of the Galaxy in Tomorrowland.

LM is a big attraction. It has a lot of moving parts. It needs downtime each year for routine maintenance. Just like Splash or the Jungle Cruise do.

    I don't expect any changes.

My biggest complaint with this ride is the lack of real water. It does not have to be much, just in a scene or two would be great. I really do not get the feeling that I am going under the sea on this ride. I also think that the beginning scene with the seagull goes by way to quick. I would actually like to hear the story, not just a sentence or two.

The most logical places to put real water is in the "Kiss the Girl" and "Finale" scenes.

I just don't think Little Mermaid has a unique, "killer" feature that sets it apart. If you think of the other dark rides they've got something unique that makes them zing:

    Peter Pan - Flying
    Mr. Toad - Speed
    Snow White - Scary
Alice - The outside path (well it used to, anyway)
    Mansion - Ballroom (real ghosts?!?)
    Pirates - Spectacle
    Roger Rabbit - Spinning cars
    Buzz/TSMM - Games
    RSR - Vroom!
Indy - Bumpy road (oh, such a bumpy road)

    LMAUA - Musical

That wasn't hard to come up with.

Not to mention that those dark rides, are, well, DARK! Lighting is a huge problem in the ride.
