As I mentioned in another thread, I had an amazing, magical day at Disneyland...until it was time to go home.
I live in the West LA area. Up until recently, I always took Disneyland Express from LAX to the resort. From LAX I can get two buses and get home. Now I take the bus and train, and just leave really early so I can get home safely, because I was priced out of the DRE when they raised their tickets to nearly $50 round-trip. However, I had two extra return DRE vouchers left so I decided to use one to get home tonight.
I checked and double checked the schedule and downloaded it to my phone from the Gray Line website. The schedule was dated to December 2013 - totally recent. It indicated that the last bus to LAX was at 8. I'd never had an issue with them before, in several years of using their service on a regular basis, so I thought it would be fine to take the last bus. You know where this is going, right? I showed up at the Disneyland Hotel with plenty of time to spare. When the bus didn't show up after a half hour, I called Gray Line and discovered that they'd changed their schedule...and the last bus to LAX had left two hours earlier, at 6.
Let me reiterate that this was not on their website. Not in their schedules. Nowhere. And now I was stranded at Disneyland (not the worst thing in the world, except that I have to be at work tomorrow!). I could have gone across the esplanade for the 460 bus, but by the time I got there it would have been 9 - and considering that the trip takes about three hours during the day when there are lots of bus connections, I probably would not have gotten home until close to 1am. I also would have needed to take the train through some pretty rough areas at late hours. There was an Amtrak at 11, but I wouldn't have been able to get connecting buses at Union Station at that hour.
I explained things to a Disneyland Hotel employee and she was able to put me on a Super Shuttle that was picking up some hotel guests. She knew I wasn't a hotel guest myself, just a Disneyland customer, but she still helped me. Thanks to the Super Shuttle I was able to get home safely. I still had to walk two miles from the bus stop - the last bus that goes near my house had already left for the night - but it meant that I didn't need to take the train late at night.
I guess that is my tactic for getting home from now on...to book a Super Shuttle! In the meantime I am SO ANGRY at the Disneyland Express. If they want to change their schedule that's fine, but to do it without telling anyone is reprehensible and irresponsible. If I'd actually been catching a flight, like most people who use their buses, I would have been in some serious trouble. So if you're planning to take the Disneyland Resort Express buses now, just be aware that they might change the schedule without warning...
And to end this post on a positive note: the Disneyland Hotel staff are the nicest, most helpful people ever. They got me home safely tonight. Yes, I'm already writing an email to Disney to compliment their CMs!!
