Re: What's your plan of attack to save up money for a Disney vacation?

Step 1 - ask wife if we can go
Step 2 - after she says no, beg wife to go
Step 3 - after she says no, really beg, produce spreadsheets showing how we can actually make money on the trip, hunt down leprechauns for their pot of gold, sell blood, part with priceless possessions, put mortgage payment on horse named Mr. Unlucky (come on you know he is due), don't buy anything for self for the year, forgo all gifts and presents in lieu of credit toward trip, sell more stuff, play lottery, refinance house, don't eat out, win publishers clearinghouse sweepstakes

yes some of those are true, you can figure out which

Get a family member to work for Disney.
The Mickey audience is not made up of people; it has no racial, national, political, religious or social differences or affiliations; the Mickey audience is made up of parts of people, of that deathless, precious, ageless, absolutely primitive remnant of something in every world-wracked human being which makes us play with children’s toys and laugh without self-consciousness at silly things, and sing in bathtubs, and dream and believe that our babies are uniquely beautiful. You know…the Mickey in us.

My mom babysits my kids and I pay her by the hour. That money adds up to pay off the flights, hotel, and park tickets...and a couple if months beforehand, I start buying larger chunks of USD for spending $$. Of course, this plan wouldn't work if my mom wasn't a huge disney nut, lol. My hubby just rolls his eyes and plays along.

We spent most of our tax return on things that we needed, but have some left over. So that is a pretty big chunk of it. I also plan WAY ahead of time and save every penny I can every month. Literally, I don't spend a single dollar on something I don't need. I get to go once every couple years (or less) so I take my saving very seriously. I make it more reasonable by only eating out once a day, and having groceries at the hotel. Having a very strict budget for spending on gifts, etc. I've been working overtime at work to get it all saved up quicker!

The easiest thing for me if using my Disney VISA for every single purchase.

Sure, this goes against what so many people advise, but it's actually free money in my case. I have never once paid interest (I pay our bill off every month) and there's no annual fee - so I earn 1% cash back that I can use for Disney gift cards, tickets, etc. I would definitely not recommend this if you are unable to pay your bill every month.

We also stay offsite, though at a nicer hotel (Anabella), so we aren't paying the Disney premium but also are not sacrificing on our accommodations. We also sign up for club type deals, and earn free nights at the hotel, etc. I'm also a member of AAA, D23, and an annual pass holder currently so I call to check what the best discount is and make sure it's applied.

Thank you to Poisonedapples for my awesome signature!

I'm self-employed and recently added a new client I bill out once or twice a month, so I "try" to save every check she sends in my vacation fund as income that was unexpected.

We also had a family member who worked at Disneyland give us passes during some of our past visits. That helped a lot.

Re: What's your plan of attack to save up money for a Disney vacation?

This year- my husband is finishing up school and will have a job by time Gumball rally is over- YAHOO! For job! haha so I had to save HARD to afford Gumball with the BFF. I asked for cash for christmas, and saved $50-$100 a paycheck, by not eating out or buying as many clothes. I work in retail and not buying clothes is HARD. I have also saved up all the clothes that don't fit in my closet any more for the past 2 years and had them in the attic. I had a HUGE yardsale and made $150... and still have more left over. I have managed to save just over $700 for this trip. WHEW! AND I get paid the day we leave for cali so excited!

Easy. Written budget every month, put a line item in for vacation, put that amount away in an account, cookie jar, coffee can, or old sock each pay period. Also sell stuff you don't use. A good yard sale can go a long way to paying for tickets. When you have enough money for vacation you book your trip.

It's a budget line item, just like the mortgage, savings, retirement fund, gas, electric, cable, etc.

Of course, that also involves living within our means and following our budget.
