When did Monstro in Storybook Land change?

Was just having a browse around Daveland's website and found some old photos of Monstro in the Storybook Land Canal boats. The older version has no lower teeth, different upper teeth and he doesn't seem to be shaped as well. I had always just presumed that the change to the current version occurred during the 1983 face lift, however there are photos from 1986 showing the old Monstro. When did these changes occur?

Also when did his blowhole stop blowing water out?

It was the ripple effect from the shock wave when his tail was blown off.

Seriously though, even though this is one of my all-time favorite rides, I never noticed any change.

Re: When did Monstro in Storybook Land change?

I know that during my childhood, Monstro was jet-black, and his color became more subdued at some point into the dark grey we see now.

i haven't seen his blinking eye effect work for a long time now, and haven't seen the blowhole spout in years.

Some photos to demonstrate the differences.

    Monstro Today

Old Monstro with no lower jaw, thinner teeth, smaller lips (do Whales have lips?) and no gums.

Older Monstro seems more 'blocky' too. I'm not sure if if is a different shape, it may just be his surroundings that have changed which have made him look different. But he does seem to be a better shape now to me at least.

Old Monstro looks scarier and more like a real whale, that's for sure - more intimidating and 'accurate' shape, pointier teeth.

I could be wrong, my memory is not what it used to be. But I could swear that I remember watching water shoot from the blowhole just last year.

Is is it just me or the old Fantasy land ( before 1983) was really ugly. The earliest memories I have are circa 1988.

Depends really, a lot of Tokyo's and Orlando's Fantasylands still have the old tent look. I know most people don't really like it but it still exists. I'd say most people would say the new Fantasyland facades look much better. I wouldn't describe this as really ugly though.

I know the blow hole was working this year as late as June.

I haven't seen Monstro spout water since last year, but just three weeks ago I know his eye was blinking.
Peter Pan: "You know, your hair is on fire."
Me: "Yes. It happened after a recent trip to Neverland."
Peter Pan: "Well, you can dunk your head in the pond behind us, if you want."

I feel like the effect wasn't removed but rather it's really unreliable and it's operation has been spotty. I'm almost certain that I've seen it work recently but I don't recall seeing it every trip.

No this actually looks pretty cool. Most pictures I have seen look ugly though.

I saw this thread while having dinner, so I swung by Fantasyland on the way out and both the eyelid and the spout were working today.
