Smile Things still in Disneyland that spark instant nostalgia for you

I think maybe one of my favorite things about Disneyland is that even w/ things changing is there are still enough classic attractions in the park to take me back to being a kid. I have a grandmother w/alzheimer's, so i doubly enjoy the nostalgia burst because I want to enjoy my memories while I know I can, just in case.

The bell at the train station at main Street USA, along w/ the "Now boarding...." spiel.
The old man on the porch and banjo music in the Blue Bayou
The talking skull and "dead men tell no tales" in Pirates
"Hurry back......" when leaving the Haunted Mansion

There are countless others, but for me, those are the ones that instantly conjure up memories of being a 5 or 6 year old with my parents at the park.
    "Have I gone mad?"
"I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are. "

-Having one of the Hitchhiking ghosts sit with you in the doom buggy
-"You're attention please" spiel on the Disneyland Railroad
    - The humming boats on the Jungle Cruise
    - Riding the Autopia
    - The drops on Pirates
    - The howling yeti
    - The whistle of the Mark Twain

Smell of the water in Pirates.
Blast of the steam whistle on the river.
Smell of popcorn (and I don't even like popcorn that much!)
    Train sounds.
    Disneyland band.

and everything that others have already mentioned.

YES to the smell of the water in POTC.

    Also:

    • Smell from churro vendor carts.
    • Odd but... the foot massage you get at the end of Haunted Mansion when you place your foot at the edge of the moving ramp.
    • Teacups music does it every time.
    • The neon Mickey outside The Star Trader, no matter how out of place it is.

Finally, gone, but a favorite... making a phone call home from the phone rooms inside the store opposite The Star Trader.

    Hmm, the smell in POTC..Always
    Passing through the HM gates
    Sliding into a Doombuggy
The Matterhorn spiel at the end of the ride prior to unbuckling and exiting the ride
The first glimpse of an Ear Balloon for each visit..Thank you Grandpa!
And thank you to Roger Radcliff- I still to this day ride that edge bumpy portion on the way out of the mansion (at an age a bit north of 40) and have for as long as I remember.
    Hearing the Tiki Room drums
Passing through the drawbridge of Sleeping Beauty's Castle.

“To all who come to this happy place; welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past...and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. -Those little Mickey shaped ice cream bars.
-A lot of aspects of POTC: The smell, the drops, the scene with the 2 ships battling.
-The dinosaur scene on the Disneyland railroad
-The scenery around the road on Autotopia.
-The music waiting that plays when you're waiting in line for Alice.
-The child costume of Princess Aurora's dress they sell in the parks (I wore that dress on one of my first trips to Disneyland).
-The floral Mickey at the entrance.

The "Here you leave today...." sign. As soon as I see that I go right back to my childhood.

I agree about the POTC's water smell! Best smelling water there is!
    Disneyland Railroad's WOOO-WOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Walking by the Matterhorn and hearing "Harold" roaring and guests screaming!
IASW's clock "tick-tock" sound and the Polynesian room!
The tikis and birds clickedy-clacking in Enchanted Tiki Room!
HM in its original state and not the ChristmasWeen vomit ruining everything!

    - That area in Toontown with the interactive doors
    - "Driving" the Mark Twain
    - A required stop at the Plaza Inn
    - Choosing Mr. Toad because Peter Pan has a long line
    - Not getting worn out climbing to the top of the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse
    - Needing a ride on Dumbo like I need air in my lungs

The things about that Disney that excited me as a child are so different than the things that excite me as an adult.

Re: Things still in Disneyland that spark instant nostalgia for you

These are the things that popped into my head while reading others posts:

The sound of the Monorail air horn (is it unique or just me).
The PA voice at the Main Street Station (Your attention please....)
    The smell of the PotC.
    The Swiss Polka.
    The Mark Twain whistle.
That always annoying IASW music (but I miss it if I don't ride it)
    MAGNIFICATION.. (with appropriate echo effects)

Re: Things still in Disneyland that spark instant nostalgia for you

Coming out onto Main Street from the right tunnel,, slight step to the left, and BOOM, I am crying. No matter how hard I try not to cry, the tears come. I am visiting the only one emotional constant in my life.

Tomorrowland bathrooms. Had to use before boarding the skyway, don't know if I would get stuck hanging in the sky and no where to go once up the cable. Every time I enter the bathrooms, I say to myself, "You gotta be kidding, they have not remodeled this facility yet.???

The hard benches of the train cars. Last remnants of a hug welcoming me, a familiar hug back from loving relative. I nestle into the far corner, lean my body and see the park all again. Not much has changed from that warmth.

The Matterhorn however, tops the list. 1963 was the first time I remember seeing it loom out of the park. Riding down the street, waiting to pull into the parking lot. It was the first Disneyland element I could see, so I searched for it much in the same manner as a child viewing the sky on a dark December night. The matterhorn reaching to the sky, a beacon. A beacon that I show to very new visitor I bring to Disneyland. The first midnight hour walk to McDs for a burger, quietly I speak to the new visitor and my son....... wait, wait for it, wait for it, ....boom there it is, we have arrived to the time of your life. The illuminated peak.

The Matterhorn is so important in my Disneyland psyche ( other than the fragrance of bags of Ontario steer manure in a retail nursery) that in 1983 the lack of a matterhorn at Disney "World cause my brain to protect me and did not record a single memory of the visit other than my army buddy and I running into the same pair of age appropriate woman thru out the day. And the April rain. I have no recollection of the park and actually remember the exasperation of rounding the corner on the ferry and seeing a barren horizon

that is why I left NYC, no towering Mt. Hood or Jefferson to guide me home. Oh those folks on the east coast have no concept of a snow crowned volcano.

Re: Things still in Disneyland that spark instant nostalgia for you

-Anything in Fantasyland and Toontown, but especially the teacup music and the IASW clock face. My family probably spent about half the day in these two lands when I was a kid. They're the only lands I actually remember walking around in as a toddler whereas with the others I just remember some of the rides.
-The attraction posters in the entrance tunnels
-Haunted Mansion and Pirates. New Orleans Square has always been my mom's favorite land so we went on these two rides a lot. The Pirates water smell was the first Disneyland scent I noticed.
-Nighttime Tomorrowland. My parents liked saving Tomorrowland for last so during the day I'm like "meh" but then at night I'm more like "yay Tomorrowland nostalgia." I mainly remember waiting in line for Autopia and taking in all the neon lights.

-And my strangest bit of nostalgia: the bathroom just outside the park entrance. At least one person always had to go right when we arrived at the park entrance every single time. My family still refers to that particular bathroom as The Bathroom Ride.

Somebody else mentioned this, and it absolutely rings true for me: stepping through the tunnel, under the "Here you leave the world of today..." sign, and walking into the magical world on Main Street. Makes me tear up every time!

Also, the smell of POTC and Splash Mountain. Makes me smile big remembering my childhood fun on these attractions!

    Fantasmic
    Huge pickles
    Mickey balloons
    Space Mountain

I could do this all day...... :-)

Wow...I thought I was weird because the POTC water smell instantly makes me both happy and a kid again at the same time. Apparently I am not the only one.
