Re: Do you want Oswald at Disneyland?

I will be among the 1st to welcome Oswald home to Disneyland,
by purchasing some of his merchandise!

And the idea of using one of the screens in the movie theater on
Main Street is a great idea. Place that with a black and white
    funhouse in Toontown.

No doubt about it, Oswald will draw a crowd!

Nay. True, Betty Boop is very retro...but she was also kept alive. Somehow. Or did someone dust her off in the 80's and stick her back on the shelf? I have no idea when she came back, or if she really disappeared at all. Oswald, on the other hand, has only been in Walt Disney biographies or history of animation books.

But, I concede...you MAY have a point. If Betty can still resonate with people, I guess Oswald can too.

Use the force Luke... let it be your guide. LOL.

Yeah I think Betty just got slapped on some consumer products and people just started buying. That's how it works in Japan. Helps if a CELEBRITY is wearing a "Oswald" t shirt on Total Request Live.

Maybe they can pair up Mickey and Oswald like an Itchy and Scratchy team.

Re: Do you want Oswald at Disneyland?

As for Betty... the thing that kept her alive were airings of her old shorts on TV (as well as two compilation movies in 1974 and 1980). She had very little else after the 30s were over. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was the first new Betty Boop animation in a loooooooooong time.

Oswald had new stuff (mostly comics) going on until the mid 60s. He did have his old cartoons played on TV as well (the Disney shorts and other silent shorts had voicing and sound effects added at this point).

The big difference: Betty never went away. She also didn't experience the big change that Oswald did. She may have started out as a dog in 1930 and later tamed down the sexiness... but the beginning character and what she is today is recognizable enough as being Betty. Oswald turned into a generic rabbit.

I live 2 miles away from Disneyland if Walt would've built it at Riverside and Buena Vista.

Re: Do you want Oswald at Disneyland?

I don't think that Oswald is a marketable character, simply because he looks too much like Mickey. Their faces are way too similar for the inclusion of Oswald not to generate confusion in many guests' minds. Add to that the fact that most people who visit the parks probably don't even know who Oswald is...

DCA could explain his backstory, but keep him out of Mickey's way.

Technically, Mickey and Oswald were both products of their time -- it was a generic style of making characters. Look at ALL of the early animated characters of the b&w era. How many look similar? Take a look at the following examples:

    Bosko

    Buddy

    Beans

    Toby the Pup

    Krazy Kat

    Betty Boop, Bimbo, Koko

    Tom and Jerry

See what I mean? They all, for the most part, share a lot of characteristics with Oswald and Mickey Mouse. Yet they're all recognizable.

People should be able to realize that Mickey is not a Rabbit.

    Nearly forgot an important one:

    Felix the Cat...

...who has gone through very little changes over the years, even less than Mickey. And Felix was a BIG Mickey competitor -- thus some of the reasoning of his design. My take? If people know the difference between Felix and Mickey, they'll know Oswald isn't Mickey.

Gotta hand it to you on this one. You're right that the characters from the 20's and 30's all look very similar.

I still think that some guests would look at Oswald and think he was an early Mickey. Question is, how many would think that?

About the same amount that look at Donald and ask their kids if they want a picture with Daffy Duck.

A surprising amount of AMERICAN park guests (those that are gauranteed to have grown up with these characters) can't even tell the Disney characters from the Hanna-Barbera and Warner Brothers characters!

If we can't get through to them that Bugs Bunny is nowhere to be found at Walt Disney World, how are we to convince them of anything?
