There are always a bunch of bicycles back there. Theyre used to get around the aprk alot faster if a cart is not available. I usually see maintance or leads using it. Some of the bikes are old looking like they were from the 50's or 60's. Pretty cool. But if theres tons of them it might be because of the Half marathon coming up.

There is a CM entry gate next to the tram gate. Most of the bikes you saw there belong to CM's (support, facilities, etc.) that use that gate. They come to work, hop on their bike and off they go to their work area.
There are other places backstage where there are large numbers of bikes
(Old Admin, TDA, CMF at DCA, etc.) There are literally hundreds of bikes. Some of them are very old and some are fairly new. You should see some of the custom paint jobs that some of them have.....probably courtesy of the paint shop. A lot of them also have custom "license plates" made by the sign shop indicating the department or person the bike is assigned to.

Alot of large vineyards and factory plants have a fleet of "Beach cruiser style" bikes because they are heavy duty, and can carry more when mounting a wire basket to the back. Makes it really easy to get around. Most places have a mechanic on hand and get their parts from the local bike shops.

When I worked on the backlot at WB...the simple explanation for bikes were the lack of serious noise. A bike is smooth and quiet normally so they don't pick up on mic...in the backstage of DL I think its a similar concept, the noise of a lot of carts might distract guests and break the magic

it's just that easy. backstage is a lot of area and the maintanence and techs have a lot of area to cover, so it's just quicker transportation. there are somedays when i was running late though when those bikes looked pretty sweet, but i never worked up enough courage to borrow one....

The Hub or center of the wheel, usually has a "clutch hub" which makes a loud ticking noise when free wheeling, but with a Coaster brake(back pedal brake) it is silent.

Police Mountain Bikes have a special silent clutch hub, this one is silent so they can sneak up on possible criminal activity.

Everytime someone backstage rides by on one of those bikes, the Wicked Witch of the West Theme plays in my head...
