Is there a real story behind the Pirates of the Caribbean and the HM?

Hi all!

All this talk about refurbishments to what are, arguably, the most beloved Disneyland attractions ever got me thinking... and reading.

The Haunted Mansion's backstory apparently has something to do with a bride who killed his husband... or a ghost who killed them both... or something. BUT - had I not read about it, I'd have basically said "Oh, the HM? It's just a haunted house, it has no story". I never thought there was a plot, other than "trying to find a way out!".

I never fully understood the Pirates of the Caribbean story, either. I suppose it's someone reminscing of old pirates, and the scenes are sort of little stories to themselves, ending, of course, with the Pirates being locked up. Am I wrong here, too?

The reason I ask is simple - I'm surprised that Disneyland is a land that tells all sort of stories - yet its two best attractions don't have very strong plots...

Not really a story on Haunted Mansion, but the pirates story (for Disney Land) is that you see the pirates attack the town, (eventually, they become the skeletons in the beginning) and get drunk, and all die (don't you love these happy disney things?

(bold is mine)

Well, perhaps in WDW the bride is male, I thought s/he was a bit un-dainty, but the Disneyland bride is all woman.

ahh... finding humor in unintentional places.

her chest wasn't always flat ya know... the effects of rotting in the ground can be murder on your figure.

Plus if her chest was too big you wouldn't be able to see that cool flashing mickey head in there.

Strobe light jewelry is a hit in the great beyond, in fact.

MiceChat at its finest!

Nope, there's no "official" story for either attraction.

Re: Is there a real story behind the Pirates of the Caribbean and the HM?

There is NO story to the Haunted Mansion. There were early story teatments that the attraction went through, but eventually the Imagineers settled and a bunch of random experiences as Walt had preferred. Some ideas from some of the early story treatments are still evident but none of them are strong enough or presented in ways to create any sort of storyline.
The new additions/enhancements that are coming to the Mansion are going to change that though and a new backstory with the bride will become evident.

Pirates has a story. This is the one I know- not sure if its the official one, but its the one I've heard many times everywhere: You see the pirates as skeletons and all their loot in the tresure caves... Then you travel back in time (that's the story's purpose for the dark, long cave) and then you see the pirates and how they got all that loot (by sacking the town)
