Space Mountain was placed in Magic Kingdom to make up for Matterhorn. It was felt that the weather of central Florida didn't lend well to the indoor/outdoor design of the Matterhorn.
Some Epcot plans had Matterhorn and Mt. Fuji attractions being placed in World Showcase, creating to equal mountains flanking the sides of World Showcase.

And plus Disneyland is special...haha
disneyland is the bEst! i didn't even notice until i was watching the disneyland resort vacation dvd and the lady mentioned it was the only one.
Also, they don't build Matterhorn at the other parks (such as Tokyo which looks and feels a LOT like Disneyland '93 except for the WDW castle) because it is more of a historic figure. Any clone won't be the world's first steel roller coaster like the original is, so why bother making one and having guests complain that Space Mountain is better instead?
Because now WDW has E:E?
I honestly don't know why but I love the Matterhorn!
There is another Matterhorn, it's called EverestOriginally Posted by Princessa_Susy
I really wouldn't call Expedition Everest the Matterhorn of WDW. They are just too different.
Here's the concept sketch for the Matterhorn as part of an Epcot Swiss pavilion:

Probably because a number of factors.
At Walt Disney World, you have Space Mountain that is very similar to the Matterhorn in terms of type of coaster, and track layout.
Im guessing another major reason the Matterhorn was never replicated because of the size of the other castles at the Magic Kingdom parks. Since the Matterhorn is the only "mountain" that is allowed to dwarf the castle and the Matterhorn is kind of supposed to be larger than the castle, it would be difficult to add another Matterhorn to the other Magic Kingdoms because every other park's castle is much larger than Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle.
I could be way off here, but that's just what seems the most logical reason to me.
Also, they couldn't make it higher than the castle in Florida due to the height restrictions. Anything higher than 200 feet there needs a red light on it, and the castle comes in just under 200 feet.Originally Posted by MasterGracey
It's also got to do with perspective and the fact that they want to have atleast some unique rides at all the parks, that's what brings in more crowds.. rides that you can only get at another park!
i think that there were plans for matterhorn wdw, i seem to remember reading that it was to built in the swiss area of fantasyland, and one of the rides(pinnochio i think) had reinforced girders built in to its showbuilding on one of the back corners during construction so it would be able to hold the weight required of the matterhorn when it was built in the future, it just never was (kinda like the epcot rhine river ride)

^There isn't a Pinocchio ride in Fantasyland. You may be confused with plans for the Matterhorn to be the centrepiece of a future Switzerland pavilion at Epcot?
