...Maybe they (Disney) should join up with Alaska?
Running an airline isn't the easiest business in the world, and many airlines that have been around for decades are close to bankruptcy. Better Disney should stick to enterprises they know about.
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

When you wish upon a star your dreams come true.
With my luck they'd put me next to a vacation club salesman for the whole flight.
All though I don't think Disney will ever go air, I adapted the ships design onto a 747-8:

Now THERE'S a Park Hopper ticket I'd like to see. DL/DCA/WDW. But other than that silliness I couldn't imagine any reason for DisneyAir, then again I said WTF?!?!?! when they opened a cruise ship company.Originally Posted by lazyboy97O

Well, there is something to be said for Disney taking more control of the way in which guests reach the company's international travel destinations. I've often thought that they have been at risk for changes in the marketing environment since the resorts rely so heavily on the airline industry. While it probably is best to form a strategic alliance with another company, I do think that the Disney trademark on an airline is a valid idea, if, of course, Disney is able to control the experience of taking the planes.
Certainly, Disney has the potential of inspiring greater consumer confidence in air travel, and that fact is not to be discounted.
The idea that occurred to me a few years ago was to use the name, "Disney Flights", for this kind of passenger service and to use Orlando, Los Angeles, Tokyo, etc. as hubs.
The problem with Disney Cruise Lines is that it does not provide an experience, which is much differentiated from competing operators. I would like to see Disney change this fact, though. And, I'd also like to see a name change, as well. "Disney Voyages" sounds nicely evocative, even though, technically, a cruise is not a voyage.
Adventures by Disney suffers from the same syndrome. That new business venture lacks much differentiation from competing companies, and Disney does not seem to be exercising much imagination in the design of the individual tours. Also, the tours are totally divorced from Disney's travel destinations, and that fact does not make much sense. Before I learned of the project, I had a similar concept, and I thought of the name, "Disney Journeys". But, I was not inclined to restrict myself to just motorcoaches. I would want Disney Journeys to focus more on rail travel and apply the cruise ship model to passenger rail service.
The existing Disney travel destinations, though, have to be the basis for any such business. Imagine, for example, a Disney-designed tour up the Californian coast. Such a thing might be a really attractive vacation extension for some people.

Are you saying this because their cruise ship business is doing so terribly??!? On what basis are you making such statements? Clearly its not based on the business they're doing.Originally Posted by Uzmati

Having characters on planes is impractical. First they would be considered part of the flight crew so they would be required to go through training. Not to mention storage space and breakrooms. Character experience on a commercial aircraft... bad idea.
Dr. Crane, while I think the concept of Disney owning an airline is deeply flawed at best, I love your take on what it could look like! Classy!!Originally Posted by drnilescrane
Actually, I'm 99% sure that Disney has already thought of this already.Originally Posted by A Disney Dreamer
The only thing that's stopping them is if this is necessary to do in order to
differentiate themselves from Universal, et al in the Orlando market.
(it probably isn't yet).
It's the same thinking that created their baggage service (Magic Express?) in
WDW. They know that a "great" vacation is made by the WHOLE experience.
Not just the time the people spend in WDW. They found that improving
the baggage handling and the transportation to&from could help how
people felt about vacations.
Well, in that case, it's only logical to realize that flying crammed in planes
w/ very little amenities definitely plays into the vacation experience.
That's why some travel agencies (here in Bay area anyway) actually have
a couple of planes that they use for their customers to Hawaii.
Now if Disney had a plane (themed), not too expensvie (say 5% over Southwest) with a LOT more leg room, meal, Disney entertainment/games/info, direct flight
to Orlando, escort to your WDW shuttle AND complete handling of baggage to
your WDW room, wouldn't that make sense? I would in a heartbeat!
They might even want to do a deal w/ a shuttle company to make it
completely door to door! You never have to lug your bags except to take
it in and out of your house!
Actually, they'll bundle the cost into your room so you
might not even see any additional expense!
BTW. these travel agencies actually out-source everything so the only thing
they really have is the fact that there name shows up on the plane.
Edit:
Some clarifications. This isn't really an "airline". They would only operate from major locations
to Orlando (and maybe John Wayne). They might do charters to HK, Narita, Paris. That's it...
No NY-Paris, SFO-NY, etc. The planes themselves have WDW livery on them. But they
could actually be operated by another carrier. Disney just paid a bit extra for the leg room,
theming and the entertainment system. For Disney, they'll be operated as COGS. More edit: Hmmm. The flight attendents would have to be Disney CMs. But the pilots wouldn't. Basically, it'll be just like Disney borrowed the Alaska Air Disneyland planes for that trip to Orlando/Orange County. On second thought, Disney probably has enough customers that they can probably own/lease the planes outright.

Re: Disney Cruise Line, there are a LOT of things that differenciate it from the competition - the biggest thing being the ships are geared towards families, and offer High quality Childrens services, Adult's areas, entertainment, Charachters, larger staterooms and NO CASINO!
The ships fitouts are also top of the line, and have had thought put into every fascet of their designs - I personaly love the Classic Ocean Liners of the past theming, and it works extremely well. I'd say from the outside, the ships rival the QMII.
That's my $0.05 cents (We got rid of 2 cent coins ages ago...)

I think Disney Air is a fun idea. If it were ever to happen it'd be an outsourcing agreement much like Disney Mobile, I'd bet.
The Alaska planes are just a paint job. The service and ammenities are still plain ole Alaska Air. I'd love to see the top notch service and atmosphere of Disney done in a plane. Disney in-flight movies, Disney mags in the seat slots, hidden mickeys on the barf bags. I can just imagine the flight attendants in retro uniforms pointing to the available exits while wearing those big mickey hands![]()
The door-to-resort idea is the best! Yeah it'd be pricey but man, it'd be cool!![]()
Actually, I think they're outsourcing the pick-up and they're offering an additional service, they can keep the entire price competitive with what you would pay for shuttle to local airport+plane fare+bus to WDW. Probably w/in 10~15%.Originally Posted by AmandasDad
A disney airline would be cool if it was like soul plane...
Pilot: Roy Disney (this would make for a really bumpy ride, like matterhorn!)
co-pilot: Hillary Clinton (because she is good at giving the wrong orders, as most co-pilots do)
first class flight attendant: lieutenant Dan from forest gump (he hasn't got much for legs, so his arms would be good at doing the motions to tell people where the exits are)
other flight attendants: some random disney characters dressed up...eg. Jessica Rabbitt
This would be a swinging good time!
