    Thanks Mojove, those are great.

I remember going to Grad nite in May 1989, (dating myself) and seeing the logs sitting in one of the back tunnels. Then my family came back and we rode it during the first months it had opened. At that time the ride had a lot of flow problems. But they obviously got worked out.

Wow! Thanks for the great photos! It's weird seeing the Haunted Mansion so "exposed" in those pics.

Disney Dreamer, that is indeed the Haunted Mansion show building. You can see it a lot better in some of the other shots. Man, you can see the rotting foundation of the then-20-year-old building and everything. It looks like the area of the HM queue underneath the train tunnel was opened up in a couple of the photos. May I assume that HM was closed during that time?

Wow! Wow! Wow! I am honestly at a loss for words. In an era before Darkbeer and Crazy Legs, pictures like these are extremely few and far between. Thank you so very much for posting these. I remember scoping the construction progress from TSI and am now kicking myself for not having taken any pictures at that time. I'm glad you did!

Datameister, HM wasn't closed during SM construction unless for routine maintenance. Which photos do you think show the HM queue opened up under the train tunnel? I don't see what you mean.

fastmountainpass, my photos are from TSI, Columbia and even some from the train (when it reopened), which you'll see in the next set.

I'm glad there are this many crazy DL construction/engineering fans out there like me! ;-)

Wow. Really cool photos. I had not idea what a big undertaking that project really was especially w/ closing down the RR and all.

    Thanks for sharing the photos!

Thank you for the awesome pictures! It's always fascinating to see a new attraction, especially one the size of Splash Mountain, being built.
    Woof!

    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Wonderful Photos. I thoroughly enjoyed them. As a person who first went to Disneyland well after the opening of Splash, it is enjoyable to see the construction of it.

I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the Indian Village and the rest of what was then called Bear Country was over there, all to showcase the Country Bear Jamboree attraction once the Indian Village had gone away. The name changed to Critter Country when Splash Mountain was built.
    Woof!

I was 8 when Splash Mountain was first being built so I don't have a clear recollection of Bear Country, but I do remember "Rufus" which was a snoring bear at the entrance (you couldn't see him, just hear him). I always got scared because I thought Rufus was going to wake up...he was a bear and I was a small child after all. All I can remember is a big wide walkway into Bear Country and that's it. It's really frustrating because I simply cannot remember, or imagine, what was there before.

I do remember Splash Mountain opening though..."The only way out is a LOOONG way DOWN". Remember that on the radio? I remember in 1987 hearing about it switching to "Critter Country" and I was kind of upset because Bear Country was one of my favorite places. I just didn't pay attention to Disneyland back then because weekly picture updates on the Internet were nonexistent and I just wasn't old enough to appreciate the ever-changing layout of the place. Boy, I wish I had paid attention now though.
