Re: And now... America Sings!!! Images from 1976

Oogie - as usual, great job and special memories for me since I started working at the park the same summer that America Sings opened (1974). At the time, a lot of us working there did wonder why they'd pick an attraction like that to replace the old GE Carousel of Progress in Tomorrowland (I loved the GE presentation as well). Obviously, though, many people grew to love this attraction, regardless of its location (yours truly as well).

Great pics! Thanks for posting those. Talk about a blast from the past. Recently I've been missing lots of extinct attractions.

Re: And now... America Sings!!! Images from 1976

There was a bittersweet memory of America Sings that I wanted to share, and, with Oogie's permission, I will do so.

I attended the same orientation class as the young CM who was killed on the attraction a relatively few days later. I remembered meeting her, and later having lunch with her a couple of times at the Inn Between...because we at least recognized one another when we were looking for someone to talk to.

On July 18, 1974, just three weeks after the attraction opened, Disneyland cast member Deborah Gail Stone was killed when she was crushed between the building's rotating wall and a stationary wall. She was welcoming new audiences as they came into the theater. Stone approached too close to the area between the rotating wall and the non-moving stage wall and was caught between them. The Attraction was stopped when guests in the adjacent theatre heard her screams.
Afterwards, America Sings was closed for two days while safety lights were installed, and the theater where Deborah was killed in was closed for an entire year. Eventually, the walls were remodeled so that they would breakaway when a similar incident occurred.

Couldn't help but think of her anytime I ever rode that attraction after that.

I didn't know her very well but couldn't help but think of her every time I rode America Sings after that.

Thanks for sharing that story, Barry. I think Ms. Stone's death certainly is one of the more sobering moments in the park's history, and it reminds us that as safe as the park is, it is not immune to tragic accidents.

Koenig's Mouse Tales mentions a pool at a Garden Grove High School that was dedicated in her honor. Does anyone know if there's a plaque that (still) exists today?

I am really sorry for the "kids" that never got to see this attraction. It's hard to believe that it's been gone longer than it was in operation.

Great pictures, nice to put some visuals to my musical history CD's I listen to at work these days. America Sings always had a good soundtrack.

Re: And now... America Sings!!! Images from 1976

These pics are awesome, and I especially welcome the one of Skull Rock. I do have a question, though, that somebody might be able to help me with.

After years of living in California, I moved away for quite a while. I made multiple trips to WDW in that time and fell in love with Splash, never having ridden the one at DL. When I moved back to CA and finally did get a shot at the one here, I was really let down. The recycled America Sings animatronics are just really not up to the ones in Florida, and understandably so. One thing in particular I noticed was that the vultures, one of my favorite parts of MK's Splash, don't wear top hats at DL. Yet in the America Sings pics, they do. What gives? Small quibble, but just one of those nagging things...especially because I'm kind of lukewarm on DL's Splash to begin with. Anyone know?

Funny you say that - I think the original AS AA's are of much higher quality but that's just me. WDW definitely has the far superior overall ride, though.

I've listened to the soundtrack of America Sings, the "Ta Ra Ra Boom De A!" part sounded like a blast!

I wish it was still here instead of that piece of crap we have now

I really wish I could have seen that. And the boat. And America Sings Drat my parents for never taking me when I was a kid
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Like many of you here, I miss this attraction! I am lucky enough to see it twice and own the soundtrack which included the 12 page book with the great art by the late Marc Davis. I wish I could find this on video someday! When I saw this show over 20 years ago, I remember the transitions as the stage turned and the theatre faded to black with those cool colored spots on the walls! I can still see those spots as I hear the soundtrack! Thanks for sharing those pics!

Yes, and the whole thing was in "Stereo" which was a big deal back then. "Hi-Fidelity" was considered very technologically advanced for the time, and they alternated speakers depending on which side the music came from.

I remember when they removed it, they promised it would return. Yeah, well, who knew they meant piecemeal in Splash, etc.....???

Then again, I'm still waiting for the Carousel of Progress to return, as promised.......

.....Walt's favorite attraction does belong at his home Park!

P.S. Do you have any pictures of "Nature's Wonderland" ????

Do you have a website where all these old pictures are catalogued ????
