My Week of Disney Dining: Mini Reviews

A week of pigging out verified that it's possible to dine very well at DLR, as long as you choose carefully.

Friday: Yamabuki sushi bar; expertly prepared, fresh sushi and plenty of non-Western (i.e., authentic) choices on the appetizer menu. Decent selection of premium sakes. Fantasmic balcony seating dessert buffet. Great view of the show and VIP ambience. The desserts? Well...the view of the show was good.

Saturday: Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour and lunch; it's not about the food. Napa Rose dinner at cook's counter; AMAZING.

Sunday: Storyteller's breakfast (always good); Whitewater Snacks lunch (uncharacteristically bad nachos); Napa Rose dinner at the bar (great).

Monday: Storyteller's birthday breakfast bash for 18 people; a blast. Dinner at the luxurious Granville's; prix fixe steak dinner a superb value ($28 for a caesar salad, steak and potatoes, and dessert). Best overall dining value in the resort.

Tuesday: Lunch at Tortilla Joe's (so-so; not as good as previous meals there). Yucky dinner at a conference at the Marriott.

Wednesday: Another great breakfast at Storyteller's. Bad Marriott lunch at a conference and another great dinner at Yamabuki.

Thursday: More bad conference grub redeemed by a third fabulous dinner at Napa Rose.

Friday: Junk food to give me a sense of reality.

Saturday: Lunch at Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen. Quite terrible, actually. Gummy, overbreaded calamari. Slightly off-tasting oysters. Very poorly executed coconut shrimp. My first and last meal at RBJK. Snack at Bengal Barbeque: always love the bacon-wrapped asparagus; the spicy Banyan Beef skewer was tough and dry...virtually inedible. Bummer.

Multiple Days: Churros and mint juleps; never tire of 'em! I enjoyed a "real" mint julep at Hearthstone Lounge. I had them make it with Maker's Mark bourbon and it packed a wallop...but I still like the fake green ones in NOS better.

Napa Rose was clearly many notches above everything else, but I was pleasantly surprised by Yamabuki and very impressed by Granville's 3-course dinner deal (actually 4 courses, because I added a shrimp cocktail).

    Thanks for the reviews.

Bad Nachos at WhiteWater??? I'm shocked. I love their nachos.

If you want good Calamari go to the Cove Bar at DCA. It's to die for.

D'oh! I forgot to go to the Cove Bar. Next time.

I think my bad nachos was just a fluke. They were pretty good the other times.
