    The acceleration felt in Test Track is pretty good.. unfortunatly the cornering g-force you feel in the 360 turn area isn't that great. I get higher lateral forces in my car on the track. But the acceleration and 'high-speed bank' are still fun

    Acceleration? G-Forces? Lateral forces?

    People, just stare at the goat as the train turns. It makes for a groovy experience. That's all there is to it. You're analyzing this too much.

    Of course, you know I'm making a funny here...

    I'm definitely going to do that when I go next week. That and the light bulb... thing. I'm usually too busy doing the patented "Rape Scream", and testing how long it is before I get a headache due to the Rape Scream. Usually its kicks in... right after the first drop.

    By the way, Gemini Cricket... that ruled. Groovy...

    Seriously, you took all the enjoyment out of Josh's Goat Trick experiment. Just relax and look at it as a fun piece of writing.

    When do we get to test the Tower of Terror "lightbulb trick"????

    OK! Now I am really confused. I have heard of this "goat trick" effect and tried it myself a few years back but still have not been able to explain or figure it out! That write up gave me an inside view but in the end confused me even more!

    Oh Bill Nye The Science Guy! Where are you when we really need you!??
    Maybe this can be recreated in NyeLabs!

    Are you confused by the Goat Effect?

    That's because this thread has focused more on the forces at work on the body during roller coasters in general, and not on what's really going on during this effect - equilibrium.

    When you make a 180 degree turn, all fluid in your body, including the fluid in your inner ears, spins slightly. This fluid, as you know, is what the body uses as cues for balance (and what causes motion sickness). By focusing on one spot during any turn, your eyes and your inner ears, get conflicting messages about what is going on regarding your balance, and you feel the spin of the turn more than if you just focus on the head in front of you.

    The technique of focusing on one spot is used by dancers, and ice skaters, to avoid disorientation and motion sickness, but in the "goat trick", you have no choice but to eventually give up your point of reference, making the disorientation even more severe.

    This nausea may result when the brain
    receives signals from its sensory systems that do not

    Something similar happens in an orbiting spacecraft, the brain receives signals from the eyes that it normally associates with being in a static environment, but at the same time it receives signals from the inner-ear system that the body is falling. This “sensory conflict” theory is the most widely accepted explanation for space motion sickness.

    The same thing happens in the "goat trick".

    And Bill Nye is great! But he has a history of getting things Disney related wrong. He famously stated that the dancing ballroom ghosts in the Haunted Mansion were a hologram, when in fact, they use a "Pepper's Ghost" effect, a completely different type of effect there.

    Re: The Goat Trick Reveled: Everything you wanted to know. (photo heavy)

    Ok...let's break this down.

    ac = v2r

    a = centripetal force acceleration
    v = velocity
    r = radius as in distance from object to self

    We assume that v remains constant or may vary slightly due to the speed of the train, however r constantly changes due to which car you ride in. The front or rear cars will provide the same sensation because the value of r does not change, however sitting in a middle car or slighly forward or rearward of the middle car you will get a different sensation.

    Each one of these factors causes the centripetal force acceleration to vary making the sensation different from each car...............

    Or maybe it is just Disney Magic!

    Got to try this one with Dusty giving the hints......another odd feeling, don't know the scientific stuff, but it was fun! Try it next time you go! Another one, is turning your head to the left in the loop on Californa Screamin', just don't be wearing glasses when you try this one.
