Exclamation Light Crowds at DCA on July 2nd.... WOW!

Decided to stop by DCA on July 2nd (many of my visits lately have been Disneyland only) to grab a few photos.

First off, came across a medical emergency, where a Adult male guest needed to be placed on a back board and stretcher next to the Tire Swings at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail.

But getting to the lack of crowds at the park....

First, there were no lines to enter the park in the early afternoon (1:20 PM)

Our group then went to Whitewater Snacks for Lunch (Air Conditioned!)

After lunch, decided to grab a few photos.....

    Walked the Route66/Paradise Pier area....

First we decided on the Golden Zepher, which only had a wait for one cycle (The CM was on the loudspeaker saying that anyone who wanted to stay on could and re-ride without getting back in line)... And why is the queue so bad?

Then it was a ride on the Sun Wheel and then off to California Screamin'

Heck, even the shaded areas were very quiet..

    http://darkbeer.smugmug.com/gallery/1624101/28/79201187/Large

California Screamin' queue was pretty much empty, with only one switchback being used....

Now this is shortly before 4 PM, no parades or other events to take crowds away from the pathways....

    http://darkbeer.smugmug.com/gallery/1624101/30/79204145/Large

Heck, Grizzly River Run, which should be the most popular ride of the day, due to the weather only had about a 20 minute wait, even though Disney set up a large extended queue...

    http://darkbeer.smugmug.com/gallery/1624101/31/79205074/Large

Of course, there are plenty more photos in my album.

So why the light crowds? I presume weather was one reason (Disneyland was busy but not packed)... But is DCA truly the AP lounge? Sunday, only Premium AP holders could enter, SoCal and Deluxe AP's were blocked out.

But this is the July 4th weekend, and Saturday I went to LEGOLAND, which was pretty busy, and the San Diego County Fair, which was very busy.

Could gas prices have an effect?

I think Gas Prices could have something to do with it. I think more people are staying local.

I don't know why Disney hasn't thought of lifting the blackout day limitation for Deluxe passes at DCA only.

I think that it just makes sense not to block AP's from DCA. I know that DL has a very heavy summer, but DCA usually does not. (Also a lower price for admission would help DCA also, but that is another topic!)

From the wait board at Disneyland, it seems both parks were not performing at par with attendance expectations. Only 15 minutes for the Matterhorn? 45 for Space? Roger Rabbit only 25 minutes?

Wow - wish I'd been around to take advantage of the light crowds. Definitely doesn't look like July based on those waits.
Warning: Portions of this attraction are intense and may not be appropriate for younger children.

Wow! I would expect it to have been much more crowded on the holiday weekend!

I hope the crowds stay low Wednesday through Friday!

Was in the park on Saturday and Sunday.
We got alot of rides done before Noon.
    Sunday also seemed light.
I think most people had the idea that the park was going to be packed due to the 4th weekend, so many stayed home.
I loved it. Made lines shorter.
However, the weather was awful. It was hot and humid.
Glad to be back to the dry heat in AZ

Can you even call what is below the Golden Zephyr a queue? Hopefully when they add Midway Mania and fix Paradise Pier they do something with the ride or the queue line.

I went on saturdy july 1, and the crows were not bad at all. 45 min for space mountain not too bad. I got stuck on indy ride though but it was cool with the lights on and got a free fast pass admission and rode the ride twice which was very fun. The crowds were ok. I though it was going to be jammed packed but that was not the case at all. I loved the davy jones effect on the pirates ride. The bride looks funny on the mansion. overall a great time at the park on july 1st.

KOGO Radio 600 in San Diego just announced that SeaWorld is at capacity (July 3rd), and they are closing the parking lot entrance.

Re: Light Crowds at DCA on July 2nd.... WOW!

I was at the Anime Con on Sunday and went over to the Park thinking that before I went home I could ride Pirates and Mansion. Rented a locker for $7.00 and walked over to the DL gates and was shocked that there were no really long lines, and a couple were wide open with no line. Then I found out this weekend was blocked on the deluxe pass. So much for that. It was late, and I was tired from so much walking on cement floors at the con with no real place to sit, so I got my stuff back out of the locker (Wow. $7.00 for less that five minutes storage - I should have paid more attention to the dates) and came home. It was too hot anyway. This heat may be keeping a lot of regulars away as well as the block out dates.

Re: Light Crowds at DCA on July 2nd.... WOW!

I don't think it's because of gas prices ... I was at Yosemite National Park yesterday, and it was packed, and people are travelling. (And as a sidenote, the academic paper I previously posted shows that gas prices don't affect theme park admissions).

It could be that people that choose to come here for the long weekend hit Disneyland on their first few days, and leave DCA for the last part of their trip, or maybe, as you speculated, it's the "annual passholder effect".

I pondered DCA, but then thought "no trees, hot day, no DCA!"
