    Any seen Walt??

Inspired by the recent thread about seeing Walt's ghost, I wanted to share my experience of meeting the REAL Walt Disney. I posted this a few years ago at Yesterland.

I think it was Summer, 1964. My mom and her friend had taken me and my best friend on our yearly trek to Disneyland. I looked forward to these trips for months in advance, having been going there yearly since 1959. On this occasion, we stopped at the Coke Corner on Main St. to get something to drink. The person serving us behind the counter was no other than Walt himself! He was dressed in a dark suit and was very cordial to us. He served us our cokes, and began to ask us what our favorite part of the park was. We chatted for a few minutes, then headed out. It was a very slow day, so our time with him was uninterrupted.

I've shared this story recently with cast members who work at the Coke Corner. (I don't think they believe me!) Anyway, I saw Walt one other time, not long before his death. He was on the train with us, pointing things out to a dignitary he was with.

    Anyone else see Walt??

Thats an awesome story, I love it when the owner of a place works with the CMS, takes on tasks around the park and stuff.

    Cool Re: Any seen Walt??

What's cool is that encounters like that were possible because he was regularly in the park checking up on things. I'm reminded of famed SF concert promoter Bill Graham by this thread. It wasn't unusual for him to do the same; once saw him riding a mini bike in the parking lot. Both looked out for their patrons (although Walt probably never collected tickets and resold them beyond the capacity allowed in).

    Cheers.

No, but around 20 years ago I worked for a TV store and delivered/set up a TV & VCR at Walt's former home at Smoke Tree in Palm Springs... it was awesome just to be in the same space that had been occupied by one of my greatest heros of all time...

    Re: Any seen Walt??

When my Dad and his brothers and sisters were little they all went to Walt Disney Elementary school. Every year they would put on an "Its a small world" musical. every year Walt would shake hands with each child who was in the performance. One year my dad asked Disney for a hug and being the kind guy Disney was he gave my dad a hug and my grandma took a picture and Walt turned to my Grandma and told her my Dad was going to be a fine man when he got older. Whenever I get to talking about how much I love Disney my family tells me this story Just thought I would share!

Am old enough to have met him, but never did....Just at his grave site! I guess that will have to do!
Mom, remember, it's not what a person is like on the outside that counts,
it's what they are like in their HEART!
