    11 Years Ago ... Disneyland's 40th Birthday Celebration Agenda!

The following is part of an old email from Disney, explaining the celebration plans for what was then their 40th birthday celebration, on July 17, 1995. I thought it might be of interest to this board:

"WHAT: Disneyland in Anaheim, Walt Disney's original theme park which
evolutionized the concept of "amusement parks" and other outdoor
attractions, will celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Monday, July 17.
Birthday cake, party hats and other surprises will be available at
Disneyland during the day in recognition of Disneyland's "40 Years of
    Adventures" tradition.

Among the Disney stars, past and present, in attendance will be Fess
Parker ("Davy Crockett") and Irene Bedard (the voice of "Pocahontas").
The celebration will be highlighted at 11 a.m. with a "Time Castle"
ceremony. Michael Eisner, Roy Disney and other senior Disney executives
will place key items from Disneyland's 40th Anniversary year into a time
capsule, to be buried for 40 years in the forecourt of Sleeping Beauty
    Castle.

WHEN: Key events in the "40 Years of Adventures" celebration will
    include:

    5 p.m. Sunday, July 16
    Grand Ballroom, Disneyland Hotel
40TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION OF THE DISNEYLAND ALUMNI CLUB Invitees will
include many veterans of Disneyland's 40 year history, including Bob
    Penfield and Ray Van
De Warker, both of whom are still working at Disneyland having joined the
    "cast" in 1955.

    7 a.m. Monday, July 17
    Main Street, U.S.A.," Disneyland
    ANNIVERSARY "CAST MEMBER" PHOTO
Thousands of Disneyland Cast Members, in their work costumes, will pose
on Main Street for a special 40th Anniversary photo, to be placed in the
"Time Castle" later that morning. The crowd will also record an "Oh,
What a Beautiful Morning" Greeting for "CBS This Morning." Media
interested in covering this early morning event should plan on arriving
at Disneyland's Main Gate no later than 6:45 a.m.

    11 a.m. Monday, July 17
    Sleeping Beauty Castle, Disneyland
    THE "TIME CASTLE" CEREMONY
Participants will include Michael Eisner; Roy Disney; Judson Green,
President of Walt Disney Attractions; Paul Pressler, President of
    Disneyland Resort; Marty Sklar, President of Walt Disney Imagineering;
Dick Nunis, Chairman of Walt Disney Attractions (and a "cast member"
since 1955); John Hench, Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering (and
one of the original planners of Disneyland), Bob Penfield and Ray Van De
    Warker.

    11:20 a.m. Monday, July 17
Immediately following the "Time Castle" ceremony, a guest celebrity will
lead a Parkwide "Happy Birthday Disneyland" sing along.

Throughout the day, visiting media will be give special opportunities to
view "The Spirit of Pocahontas" stage show, The Lion King Celebration,
FANTASMIC! and the Main Street Electrical Parade.

9:25 p.m. will mark the premiere of "Light Fantastic," a special light
effects show which will be part of the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks for
    the remainder of the summer.

In a related event at the Disney Gallery, New Orleans Square, Disney Art
Editions will present "The Art of Animation Cels," featuring Disney
artists hand inking and painting cels in honor of Disneyland's 40th
Anniversary and the recent release of the animated film "Pocahontas."

"The Art of Animation Cels" will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon and

from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, July 17, in the Disney Gallery.

That's all for now, make sure you check out the Birthday Card for

I believe that the "PC" changes to Pirates were in 1997.

Re: 11 Years Ago ... Disneyland's 40th Birthday Celebration Agenda!

Wasn't "Lights Fantastic" a network of spotlights placed throughout the park that came alive as part of a nighttime display - or part of the fireworks show?

EDIT: Yeah, here's an excerpt from Kevin Yee's "101 Things You Never Knew About Disneyland"

The sails visible along the roofline of New Orleans Square were installed to cover giant searchlights

In 1995, Disneyland began "The Lights Fantastic," a network of gigantic searchlights positioned at various points around the Park, where the colored beams could synchronize in a nighttime display. Each searchlight was 7,000 watts and fully automated, with twenty-one total in the park: five atop Pirates of the Caribbean, five at Mission to Mars, five more behind Toontown, and three on each side of Fantasyland. An Herb Ryman conceptual painting of New Orleans Square, created to provide tone before more specific designs were drawn, includes just such a scene of sails peeking over the roofline, and this view inspired designers to capture Ryman's original concept when covering up the Lights Fantastic.

Um, there was no 'Light Fantastic' in 1995 for the 40th.

(Spotlights were placed all over the park, to really cool effect, for the 32nd birthday in 1987.)

You know, reading over this reminded me... I wonder if I could find an mp3 of the song "40 Years of Adventure" anywhere? (from the little stage show they used to do at the Tomorrowland Terrace during the summer of '95)

Actually there was. I didn't know it had an official name, but indeed a new network of moving spotlights were installed all over the park that created various patterns in the sky as they moved around and met in the center, etc. They were not just during fireworks time but continuous throughout the night. It was quite nice, and was a shame as the lights stopped working one by one until the effect was turned off completely.
